I can't believe this happened in 2012

I hate when people say "I can't believe [shitty event x,y,z] happened in 2012" as if the year means a fucking thing.

Don't pretend like we live in an equal society because we don't. 2012 may be slightly less unequal than 1912, but it's still remarkably unequal.

I *can* believe the shit that still happens in 2012.

We live in a world filled, by and large, with complacent idiots. The vast majority of people like to assume the world is okay because that's far easier than admitting that it's not. If you acknowledge that the world is fucked up, then it's a lot harder to rationalize not taking any action.

Equality is not a fact in 2012, it is still a goal, as it always has been. However, we are not there yet. If you think equality (gender, race, sexual preference, class, or any other) is a battle that's been won, you're an idiot.

So I'm not surprised that women's rights are under attack in America, because I know there are still lots of sexist idiots in America.

I'm not surprised that gay hate crimes happen in America, because there are still lots of homophobic idiots in America.

I'm not surprised that racial bigotry still happens in America, because there are still lots of racist idiots in America.

Far as we may have come, it's still miles to go before we sleep.

We still say things like "don't get raped", when we should be saying "don't rape". And "don't get shot" instead of "don't shoot". This is a problem.

Saying "don't get shot", effectively says "be afraid of people of color in hoodies". This is categorically wrong.

Saying "she shouldn't have dressed like a slut", effectively says "it's okay to rape her if she's dressed slutty". This is wrong.

Such arguments only serve to draw attention to the victims instead of to the criminals and that is WRONG!

I never would have guessed that Geraldo Rivera would be the last straw, but God damn if my back isn't broken.

The complacent idiots do nothing and so the bigoted idiots get to run the world.

rant and ramble
