I (knee)d you tonight

In my pursuit of trying new fitness challenges, I decided to take up running. The thing is, I hate running. Just have no knack for it, and I'm a huffing-and-puffing mess in seconds no matter what. Never mind what the shocks do to my knees ( Read more... )

Joint pain shouldn't be endured. Tendons and ligaments, unlike muscles, never bounce back to normal if they've been overstrained. If you're still in pain after your next workout, I would see a doctor for further advice.

I've sprained both ankles many times over, and have been told by doctors and physical therapists that my ligaments there are now unable to properly keep the ankles in proper alignment. I wear braces to support them when I do aikido, but I can't put a great amount of stress on them anymore, which is why I've stopped running for exercise.

Any tips for running with knee pain are most welcome.

Yeah. Don't.

Seriously, if you're injured, even if it seems small, don't push it or you'll end up causing serious injury that could be lifelong. I did that in aikido because I was prepping for testing, tore a lower back muscle, and was out for a month and a half - I still tested, but then took a month off after testing to recuperate some more. And my lower back still periodically will freak out, like it has recently with starting new workouts. It sucks to take time off, but it's important to find other things to do that won't stress out that joint right now. Swimming is what I would recommend, since you'll get all the cardio and muscle building of running and there's no stress on the joints at all.

I didn't realize there were different styles? We studied/study Ueshiba's style? From what I've been taught, there shouldn't be any other styles - aikido is aikido. It's not like kung fu.
