In my pursuit of trying new fitness challenges, I decided to take up running. The thing is, I hate running. Just have no knack for it, and I'm a huffing-and-puffing mess in seconds no matter what. Never mind what the shocks do to my knees.
But this past week I decided to start running - I wanted a workout, but it was too nice outside to go into a gym. Plus, I'd just bought these kickin' Nike running shoes, so I thought I'd put them to their intended use.
Monday I drove to Norton Park in Plainville after a gym workout, and ran a mile around the park. Didn't feel too bad. So Wednesday I went to Page Park here in Bristol, then Page Park again for a couple of laps. All told, while I took breaks (including an hour on the phone) and stretched and all, I was out from about 2:30 until after 5.
And now my left knee is fucked.
Well, not really. But that Wednesday I pushed the knee pain out of my head and kept jogging along for that final mile. Even though I could feel the pressure point of pain on the outside of my knee, almost like the bones hit each other, but likely the ligament there saying "Enough." Oh, it did the next day.
It's gotten better day by day, but walking down stairs is the worst. That's where the whole "walking is a series of controlled falls" is most apparent. I was used to swelling and pain in the middle of the joint from time to time, but this outside one actually makes me change my walk. But it's still feeling better, and Icy Hot is awesome.
Going back to the gym today. Gonna have to stay indoors for a bit on short elliptical sessions, but looking forward to being back on the track again soon.
Any tips for running with knee pain are most welcome.
