A young woman made her way up the long drive way belonging to the abandoned X mansion. She hadn't been here in a while, the last time being when she had come "home" to find it standing emtpy and the professor gone. She hadn't had the nerve to come back since. But now she was tired of hiding from the problems, she had been staying at her parents house and though she knew they loved her they just didn't understand her. They kept pushing her to be like everyone else, to go out and enjoy life. How was she to do that though? Honestly, every single person she cared about had dissappeared and she was suppose to act like nothing was wrong
( ... )
Avery had been nosing around for a while, but she didn't find anything in the room to tell her where everyone might have gone. With a sigh she left it, deciding she should just head back to the kitchen and see if there were any salvageable canned goods she could crack open and eat before starting the search again. It turned out to be just the right thing to do, because as she made her way to the main stairwell, she was hit with not one but two fresh scents. One was definitely human, and vaguely familiar. The other one though...was it a reptile? It was similar but she couldn't quite figure it out. It made her nose itch with irritation and she rubbed it a little.
She walked over to the top stair, gazing down it with a curious expression. "Hello? Who's down there?" She called out cautiously. She was pretty sure it was one of the residents down there, but just to be sure she remained at the top of the stairs for the moment. One could never be too careful after all.
Kitty was in the process of walking through the hall towards the kitchen hoping she could find some can foods to eat. She didn't have much money with her and hadn't stopped to eat all day and she was starving. But before she could reach her destination she heard someone call out and spun around, her gaze searching out the source of the voice. "Whoa! There's someone here? It's me, Kitty." Kitty moved so she could see up the stairs, and was just able to see a girl standing there. "Hey, I know you! Avery right? Is there anyone else here?" She quickly looked around, as if expecting everyone to jump out and say welcome home, but the rest of the building with silent.
As soon as the girl spoke, the name clicked with the scent and Avery visibly relaxed. Her shoulders dropped a bit as she let the tension leave her body and she half skipped down the stairs to meet up with Kitty. She hated to be the bearer of bad news for the girl, but it seemed there was no help for it. So she shook her head in response to the girls question.
"No one else is here. Even that redhead from the infirmary is gone. Only reason I know she was there is because her medical chart was still on the end of the hospital bed along with a picture." Avery put a hand to her chin with a look of concern. "I was about to see if there were any canned goods to eat. Don't open the fridge by the way, it's quite a nightmare in there."
As she spoke, she began heading towards the kitchen before stopping abruptly and glancing over at Kitty once more. "By the way, there is...something else here. It kind of smells like a reptile but....not. I don't know how to describe it." Instinctively she rubbed her nose, the smell irritating it once again.
Kitty watched Avery come down the steps with a smile, it was so nice to see a slightly familiar face. But as the other girl spoke, her smile slowly slipped from her lips, "Oh..." Kitty really couldn't think of anything else to say, everyone was gone. She stared off into space for a moment and missed the sentence about the fridge being a nightmare she was so caught up in her surprise.
Kitty was dimly aware of Avery walking towards the kitchen but her next sentence finally started her out of her thoughts. "Smells like a reptile?" Kitty blinked then a light came on, "Oh duh! Lockheed where did you go?" A few moments later the miniture dragon looking creature flew into the room, intrupted from his explorations. "Lockheed, this is Avery. Avery, this is Lockheed." Lockheed gave alittle bow of his head as he was actually a very smart creature, before flying ocer to Kitty to hover over her shoulder. "I found him..or maybe he, like, found me. I'm not totally sure."
Avery leaned forward, getting nose to nose with the little dragon like creature and giving it a small sniff. Now that she had an entity attached to the smell, it wasn't irritating her senses anymore and the was thankful for that. Still she felt bad, since there was no one else there in the mansion. She climbed up on top of the kitchen counter, opening the cupboards and taking out two cans of beans. She hopped nimbly down after that, popped one of her claws out, and used it to open the cans, handing one to Kitty along with a spoon.
"Bon appa...appe...uhm...oh forget it. Here. eat." Avery finally opted to go with the 'Loganese' version of the phrase. She sat cross-legged on the Island, shoving cold beans in her mouth as she chewed thoughtfully. "So...you wanna go look for them?" She asked abruptly, setting her spoon inside the can for a moment to give Kitty a questioning look.
Kitty watched the scene between Avery and Lockheed with a smile. There were a very few people she could show the little dragon like creature too as many wouldn't understand and want to lock him up or take him away to hold expirements on and that was something she could not allow. Kitty pulled out a chair to the island and plopped down on it with a sigh and took one of the cans from the other girl with a smile. "Thanks! I'm so hungry this could be a steak dinner!" Kitty grinned as she took the spoon and started to dig into the food.
It was as her mouth was full that Avery asked the random question, then again maybe it wasn't so random considering they were sitting in the middle of the abandoned Xmansion. After chewing and swallowing, Kitty nodded and set her own food and spoon aside. "Well yeah, but where do we start looking? I mean we can't just go around asking people 'Hey have you seen any mutants running around?' It would just be to dangerous."
Nodding, Avery half chugged her beans like she had a can of soda there. "Well, with my nose, we might be able to at least get a start. But, I don't really know my way around, so if you can show me to say...that Professor guy's office, I can sniff around and see if I can get a lead." She grinned "Also, I may be able to ask some questions of some of my...less public contacts. There are people from my past life that might be able to help us. And if not..." She cracked her knuckles tellingly "I'll make sure they change their mind."
"Oh yeah, cool dragon by the way. Where do you get something like that anyway?"
