Name:
my_scheherazade, also known as Kaiti
Team: War!
Let's talk about: my_scheherazade!
1. How long have you been writing fan fiction and/or making fan art and/or whatever else (vids, knitted goods, pornographic gingerbread cookies)?
I wrote my firs fan fiction when I was fourteen. It was this disastrously cracky Lord of the Rings fic in which Legolas was the host of a cooking show. That was about eight years ago, so I like to think my writing has developed a bit since then.
2. Have you participated or are you participating in any other fandoms?
Lord of the Rings is my one true fandom (you never forget your first, you know?) I’ve also written for Heroes and been a reader in several others.
3. What fanwork are you most proud of? Or, what is your favourite of your fanworks? (links, please!)
I don’t have much online anymore (old archives fall off the face of the internet, computer crashes, etc.) but my favorite of the things I’ve done recently would be this drawing right here:
Oh yeah. Cuddles is what he wants.
4. As far as creative processes go, what type of writer/artist are you? Do you create an outline/find photo references/make maps, etc., or do you jump in and go with the flow?
Um… yes? Sometimes I outline everything beforehand. Other times I get inspired and write a scene that’s stuck in my head and piece everything together when I have a few of these stacked up. As far as the actual writing goes, I always write my first draft longhand (you know, with an actual pen and paper,) then type it up when I do my first edit. Computers kill my creative mojo.
I use a reference whenever I draw. Not that I replicate, but that I need to see their actual face when I’m drawing it.
5. Where can interested readers/viewers find more of your work? (homepage, LJ fic index, etc.)
There isn’t much, as I said, but this LJ is exclusively for my fan work.
6. Do you write original fiction (poetry, screenplays)? Do you create original art (comics, photographs, quilts, wedding cakes)? Care to share?
Yes. I actually do much more original work than fan work. I had a few things published in a local literary journal, called Plains Paradox, last year. I also went to art school for design, so there are closets full of art at my parents house (though, none of that is online because it’s simply too big to scan.) The thing is, because I was studying design, I can draw anything man made with scale accuracy, but I never learned how to draw people. I’ve been using fanart to learn figuring drawing.
7. How are you so awesome?
Osmoregulation.
Let's talk about: SGA!
8. What do you enjoy most about SGA and/or SGA fandom?
I love SGA because it’s hopeful. All the characters are complete misfits who, despite their courage, loyalty, and brilliance, are seen as expendable by everyone on Earth. They literally had to leave the galaxy to find a place where they belonged. Even with the whole space vampire, constantly fighting for their lives thing, they found a home and made real connections with other people, some for the first time in their lives.
As for the fandom… how could you not love it? Everyone is so smart and creative, with surprisingly little drama. Some of the fics I’ve read here are better than your average novel, and I’ve never come across a story that I wanted to turn over to Godawful Fan Fiction. It’s all about the quality and the community.
Also, Stargate is the only story I know in which, literally, anything is possible. You can send them back in time 300 years, turn them into robots, or write them into any AU setting you can think of and it’s still technically canon because time travel, transmogrifying, and alternate realities are practically passé in the show. As a writer or an artist, that’s exciting.
9. Why do you ship McKay/Sheppard? What draws you to the pairing, what do you like and dislike? Favourite scenes or episodes? Quotes? Screencaps? What other SGA pairings do you ship?
I love their dynamic. Both Mckay and Sheppard are irascible and emotionally stunted, yet somehow bang out this really great relationship. They snark, they hassle, but they’re always there when it matters. Plus, the pairing is as good as canon.
I think if you didn’t love The Shrine you’d have your Mcshep license revoked, so I won’t be redundant by once more extolling its virtues. Echoes is probably my favorite Mcshepisode, followed closely by Doppelganger. The infamous tack vest pull in The Ark never fails to make me squee like the fangirl I am. I have so many more favorite moments I could list, but you all probably know and love them just as much, and our lives are short, so let’s move on.
10. Why did you choose to join Team War?
I can’t write fluff. It’s just not in me.
11. C'mon, you know you wanna! Just a bit of squee about your Match fic?
Actually I’m in a blind panic right now because I thought of something that makes everything work much better, but it means I have rewrite almost everything. Wish me luck?
