So what am I gonna USE this for?

My pin badge collection has gotten silly, really. So now it's displayed rather than worn, thanks to some nice webbing I found in the clearout and stuck my name on. However, there was a bit (heh!) more than I needed... and now I need to figure out what to do with the spare. So, suggestions, if you would, for what I might do with some stout webbing, ( Read more... )

costuming, ramble

Can't afford to do that.

I was thinking in terms of a use other than pin badges. There's already plenty of space for expansion on the section I cut off for said badges, so the 9 yards remaining are available for use in other projects...

What do you mean by "webbing"? voxwoman June 18 2006, 22:56:43 UTC
is it also known as "gros grain ribbon"? It can certainly be used for costuming, and depending on the application, one costume could use up the entire 9 yards (if it's what I think it is, anyway).

If you really hate holding on to it for a future application, you could gift it to a medieval recreationist - I'm sure they'd be very happy to get it.

Not quite. I know grosgrain; it's what I have around my winter hat. This is altogether chunkier; it's a wide herringbone weave, so there's a definite "V"-shaped grain running along it, and I'm pretty sure it's stout cotton.

Let me put it this way, I wouldn't be hugely surprised to finf out that properly handled, this stuff could support my weight. Grosgrain certainly wouldn't.

I am now visualizing it as something similar to what is used for backpack straps. Certainly it can be used for tie-downs for biking, and as a "plain" trim for garb, or for reinforcing certain bits of costuming (shoulder straps sort of thing).

I did a similar thing with my button collection, but I used a couple of the belts I made on my inkle loom for a display ribbon (and also to display my weaving, which usually just sits in a box).

Something like, yes. It's stout stuff. Give me a bit and I'll take a photo of it.
