State Time Trial Championships...

Rode my bike back and forth again yesterday morning. It was a thoroughly frustrating experience, though after I was done, I think it was still rather fun. I like the idea of a heart rate monitor warning you with an "EEE"... probably much like the sound one makes when having a heart attack on a bike. ;)

Too bad about the counteracting wireless freqs though.

What's the context for this? Do you challenge yourself to a certain biking course every year? Are you training for something in particular?

Sounds neat, though.

Heart rate monitors cost anywhere from $50 to $350 depending on the features. They have an electrode band that you wear around your chest that picks up heartbeats and transmits them, and a wristwatch that receives the signals and does the calculations and display.

Basic models will display current heart rate, and maybe maximum, minimum, and average. Top of the line models include GPS receivers and will upload map data to your computer showing you where you went, how big the hills were, and what your heart rate was at each hill, etc.

Mine is a basic $50 model that is 7 years old and has been dropped a few times, and was once partially eaten by a dog. Sometimes it shows me current heart rate, but most of the time, it just interferes with other radios.

The race is a time trial, which is kind of like a qualifying run. Racers go out at 30 second intervals and complete the course with no interaction with other racers. The idea is to find out what is the fastest you are capable of going with no outside help ( ... )
