Still 20/20

Other than a very cursory eye exam with my physical for a co-op job at GE and when I was on the varsity fencing team I have never had a real eye exam. I had my first this morning. I am happy to say my vision is 20/20 and my eyes are very healthy. I am still red-green color blind, but I didn't expect that to change. The eye exam was pretty cool ( Read more... )

There are two things with the dilation drops. One, they reduce your depth of field because of your pupils being wide open (sort of like opening up the aperture on your camera - you get a lot more light in, which is good in the dark, but you lose the ability to get things both close and far from the camera in focus at the same time). The other is that, well, they let more light in, which really sucks if you're supposed to drive home afterwards and you're headed into an evening sun.

Anyway, my -10 diopter eyes wish a pox upon you ;)

Yeah, I normally wish awful things on people who brag or comment on or even mention their perfect uncorrected vision, but you're color-blind, so you get a pass.

In other news, my left-eye astigmatism has magically made itself negligible, and my prescription has only increased by -0.25 in eight years. I am an excellent candidate for corrective laser surgery. I'm going to let it go for a few more years to make sure I'm not advancing, then do it and not look back.

Now, the only thing that makes me hesitate is the fact that all modern contact lenses have UV shielding. So even when I'm not wearing sunglasses, I'm working against macular degeneration, something with which my mom is beginning to have problems. This stops if I get lasik. Factor in the cost and the risk (albeit small) of complications, and ooh, this is an interesting conundrum.
