Appropriate song for current events

I had this Tom Paxson song, sung by Arlo Guthrie:

on an album I listened to over and over again as a pre-teen. (I had no idea at all what it meant at the time; I remember getting my mother to explain it to me.) It's been stuck in my head again, for obvious reasons. It's worth a listen ( Read more... )

Nicely put. I mean, I *am* a moderate free-marketeer at heart, and actually like, in retrospect, a number of the things Reagan put into motion. But the people who took some basically sensible ideas and turned them into a religion have gone way, way too far.

Or to put it another way: the far Right thinks that the Markets are always correct, and the Government is always wrong. The far Left thinks that the Government is always correct, and the Markets are always wrong. Both miss the point that both Markets and Government are *tools*, and the only way to make things work smoothly is to use both those tools sensibly and moderately...
