A good deal of my Thanksgiving was spent reminiscing about Highlander because one of the people we invited for dinner was an old friend from the HL newsgroup in the mid-nineties, and...man, it was really a heady time back then, wasn't it? I wasn't even writing fic then (barely reading, although you were one of the first fanfic writers I ever loved), but apart from that, it was an all-encompassing fannish involvement (I certainly never went to actor cons in my post-HL days) and I adored it.
Mind you, if I had learned to use a pseud before plastering my name all over the internet, that would have been a good thing. :)
It really was. I still credit involvement with highlander fandom for being the thing that actually made me get over my fear of new places. I traveled to places I'd never been before because of it. And yeah, as many cons as I went to that had actors in HL, I've never wanted to repeat it...Reunion was the last con I went to that had talent, and I stayed far, far away from them
( ... )
It was Highlander for me too. I'm sure that's where I first encountered you, and a lot of others. The "Big List" scared the daylights out of me, but the Methos groups were much friendlier.
And it's been fun finding you in various fandoms as I've made my own fannish journey.
I suspect that part of the reason SPN remains fun is that there's a been a reconvergence of some sort of many o the people I met and got to know in HL who are now in SPN too and it's been awhile since I've been in a fandom with so many familiar people. All to the good, I say!
Thank you for this answer, it was very inspiring to read in general and because of two things: first is, I enjoyed your stories and 'am rereading them now and then and it was because of MBB where I've found out those stories I realized that sometimes fanfiction is more interesting and even profound than originals and became deeply invovlved in writing my own stories secondly - for me Highlander became something of revelation (though I've seen it the first time it was aired here, a bit later than in States, but also in 90es, and I liked it, but wasn't involved), I found it second time instinctively after I've parted with the friend and it gave me a great support, opportunity to understand some of my problems and to speak of it through the other's eyes and a whole new world of friends, talks, stories, vids. Even my English improved very much, up to writing fics. So - it is experience :))
OMG! You bring back such fond memories. All I could do is shake my head violently reading your entire answer. Yes, yes and YES!!!
Anne and I often fondly reminisce about the piddling flame wars of today compared to the WARS (literally, with factions and antics and attacks) in Highlander. You really verbalized everything that I feel about both Highlander and fandom. I almost wish I was still fannish about it because some of my best friends and the neatest people on the 'nets are still there!
How I never ever ever thought I could possibly love anyone more than Methos or ever get tired of discussing how he must be viewing life (and death) after 3000 years and yes, even what color his eyes are. How I will never stop rolling my eyes when I read a fic with Duncan calling him Old Man. heeeeeeee

I hadn't thought about that, but you're right, there is a huge crossover.
And it has been fun finding folks again or just reviving old conversations.
