Oh gosh, the fannish explosion around Highlander was pretty amazing, wasn't it? I think another source of joy, for me, was that some parts of canon were pretty laughable, leading to my first experience with: Fans Make It Better. (Later, I saw the same thing with Sentinel and TPM.)
