Twin Peaks - The Pilot

Even though I'm a kid of the 90s, I never saw Twin Peaks. I remember the theme music vividly and saw the titles a number of times, but I never saw the actual thing, because I kept on catching it from the middle and I knew that there was no point in watching it unless I saw it from the beginning ( Read more... )

It's definitely dated at this point, but it was amazing and ground-breaking when it was first broadcast.

I wouldn't look at the characters as clichéd, though. David Lynch creates archetypes and then he explores them and then explodes them.

That's the thing with watching things too late. As I said, if I had watched it back in the day, I am sure I would have thought it the best thing ever. It was kind of when I read Naomi Klein No Logo ten years after it was published. I still thought it was a great book, but I wasn't as blown away as I would have been if I'd read it when it first came out.

I'm assuming David Lynch will add a twist to everything - I remember his Blue Velvet - but that doesn't stop me from being totally over love triangles.

As Mel said, I can see how it might look dated now but it really was groundbreaking TV. The pilot is kind of slow too as the characters are all being introduced and it's kind of long and plotty. I don't think it ever gets to ALL THE ACTION stage, but nevertheless the pace picks up a bit and the plot gets more intriguing.

Also, the characters might on paper be cliches but are actually anything but. I have seen it loads before, but I'm happy to do a re-watch while you're watching :)

I'm curious to watch the whole thing, because I know there will be crazy plot twists and stuff. But so far I am more invested in the secondary characters: Sheriff and FBI Agent, police telephone girl and crying police officer, beautiful mill owner from Hong Kong and the mysterious Dianne.

The theme song is quite haunting and beautiful, is it not? It's called "Firewalk With Me" by Angelo Badalamenti.

Yeah! I distinctly remember it from back in the day. I might have not seen the tv series, but I heard the song, and the theme music, many times.
