Twin Peaks - The Pilot

Oct 11, 2014 01:57

Even though I'm a kid of the 90s, I never saw Twin Peaks. I remember the theme music vividly and saw the titles a number of times, but I never saw the actual thing, because I kept on catching it from the middle and I knew that there was no point in watching it unless I saw it from the beginning.

So in the spirit of 90s nostalgia, I decided to watch it. I don't know how fast I will get through it - the pilot was 90 mins long! is each episode going to be so long? - seeing as I am marathoning Supernatural at the moment, and generally a bit too busy to watch a lot of tv.

Problem is I'm seeing it almost 25 years too late. I am a lot older now and have seen an awful lot of TV, which means I am rather jaded and easily bored. TV shows have moved on, after all. I'm pretty sure if I had seen it in the 90s like I was supposed to, I would have loved it.

Anyone up to watching it with me to talk about it?

[For those who haven't seen it - like me - I'll put all my thoughts under the cut]
So let's see major impressions from the pilot:

1.Awesome music - but I knew that. Even though it's a bit too emo and leading at points.

2. Cool locations shots, this place is pretty idyllic and up in the mountains I'm guessing.

3. The pace is so slow! We really do have shorter attention spans nowadays! Plus the fact I am constantly on edge, so I have a hard time following slow paced things any more, because I can't slow myself down and relax.

4. The Sheriff is awesome, and the FBI agent is hilarious. I love their chemistry. I'm assuming that they are a major slash pairing in the fandom. Is there a Twin Peaks fandom by the way?

5. So many many love triangles. Bleurgh! Love triangles bore me to death. What's the point of them? Everyone is screwing around in this town. That's the problem with small towns, they are so boring, that there is nothing else to do but play musical sexual partners. Boring!

6. Was it me, or did everyone jump to the conclusion of Laura being dead a bit too fast. Did they all know something? She could have run away, or been kidnapped, or injured. Yet the moment they were told something was up with her, they immediately all thought dead.

7. So many cliches!! So Laura is the popular pretty girl with a secret, who is going out with Bobby, popular pretty boy, who is two-timing her with a married woman (and possibly others). She is secretly also seeing James (standard romantic outsider biker). What is the point of this triangle? Why not just go out with James and ditch Bobby?

Her best friend Donna is the bland good girl (who turns out not to be?) who is going out with macho jock Mike, Bobby's best friend, ugh typical!, (why? she doesn't seem to like him and he treats her like shit. This is the sort of stuff that totally alienates me from this sort of shows.) while at the same time has a thing for James (really? I'm getting fed up already!)

And then there is the other girl who got attacked and the oddball Audrey to fit into the story. Hopefully they will prove less cliched. Audrey is already letting me down though... (Lovely shoes however!)

Also we have Johhny - an autistic boy? - who probably is a red herring since his name also begins with J.

8. Who is Dianne? I am far more invested in finding out about Dianne than learning any more about the muddled love lives of these small town teenagers. I am assuming FBI Agent is tapping himself and then sending Dianne the tapes by post? I love that idea!

9. So if season 1 is finding out who killed Laura, what is season 2? Or did they spread it out over both seasons?

tv, music, twin peaks
