[The television flickers. Whatever show you were watching is gone, replaced by the somber face of a newscaster.]

Folks, we're sorry to interrupt your regularly scheduled program with this breaking news announcement. I'm afraid I've just received a bit of... disturbing news. Young children and those with weak stomachs may need to leave the room.

[A panning aerial shot of an idyllic small town fills the camera.]

It seems that at midnight last night, the entire town of Westport was found dead in their homes. The causes of death varied from individual to individual: some were shot, some strangled, some simply cut to ribbons by common household utensils. The extent of the carnage has been described as a "bloodbath rivaling any horror picture" by police investigators.

[Clearly disgusted men in uniform take photographs and compare notes amidst a street covered in bodies. Men, women and children lie in various stages of death: some hang lifeless from the trees, others lie impaled on the ground.]

The source of the murders remains unknown. A federal report has officially dismissed rumors that the tragedy is communist in origin, despite general public opinion to the contrary. Police efforts to catch the killer or killers are hampered by baffling forensic evidence: as far as they can tell, it appears that many, if not all of the victims murdered each other before apparently killing themselves.

[A shot taken inside a home: two children stare up at the camera, their throats slashed. A woman, presumably their mother, lies slouched against a wall: a bloody butcher knife lays in her hand, and her own throat has been slashed as well.]

Today is a dark day in our great nation, but none have more cause to be frightened than the citizens of the neighboring town of Mayfield. Whatever the cause of the killing spree in Westport is remains to be seen, but the odds of it being contained to a single town are remarkably low. Citizens of Mayfield are advised to leave town until the situation has been deemed safe.
We turn now to our reporter in Washington, Larry Williams, for word on th☓☢☵ ☭☸☹ ☽♁☿♛--

[The news report cuts out, and your television returns to its normal programming.]
