Camping Trip With Sniper and Scout - Friday

Apr 07, 2010 23:29

Who: Sniper, Scout and a bunch of children.
What: Camping Trip!
When: April 8th - 10th
Where: Mayfield Park.
Warnings: It is Sniper and Scout teaching basic survival lessons.  You do the math.

[Sniper would wait for most of them to gather, an hour after school on Friday.  Those who come late will also be told what was going on.  Always with a cheerful and friendly smile.  He was happy for how many he got.  Some might notice he didn't harass too much about a permission slip or really ask any questions no matter the condition of the ones he got.]

Thank you all for coming.  You can put your belongings over there with the tents for now.  We'll work on setting them up later.

First let me introduce Scout, he is a very resourceful young man and will be helping me out here this weekend.

Those of you who don't know me can call me Sniper.

Now, I promised camping and basic survival.  Sadly the park isn't great for some things but it's the best we have.  Therefore I'll stick with the basics we can do.

First fun activity is make your own bow.  Something everyone should learn to do because a bow is a very useful tool.

[Sniper would pull his own, no arrows.  Drawing back the string and letting it snap taunt again.]

A bow is also the most useful ranged tool you can make yourself.  We are going to start with having you find strong branches to use and carving them down to size.  I have the string needed to tie the ends.

When that is done you will notice I have a bunch of chairs lined up over there with pillows sitting on them.  The pillows have red t-shirts on them.  When we are done making the bow I have practice arrows and you'll get a chance to shoot at those targets.

Scout and I will be here to help every step of the way.  Now, once I give you your knives you can go find your sticks.  Be careful not to run with the blade out and be careful of your fellow campers.

[Sniper would walk over and hand each a hunting knife that was sheathed.  A good start and a great role model kids.]

Begin!
