She would be so ashamed...
But he can't, no... won't, back down. They had to move forwards, they decided that a long time ago, looking back at regrets was something they couldn't afford. If they didn't tell her, they would spend their whole time with her here in a state of guilt. If anyone deserved to know the truth, it was her. She was the reason for everything, she was their mother. Whatever the outcome, though, Ed and Al would face it side by side as they always did.
Walking into the house he had woken up in only a short time ago, Ed by his side like a (smaller) shadow, he looked about for their mother as though worried she would have vanished into thin air.
"...Mom?"

It should always be together.
Therefore, the smells that greeted them were familiar and warm... a nice late breakfast to warm them up after the chill of a Mayfield winter. She's poking her head out and giving Alphonse and Edward a wave, wiping her hands on her apron and trying not to look at all concerned for them. Every instinct in her has her wishing to bridge the gap between them and gather them both up into her arms tight as she could.
...It's so good to have them both here with her. Is that selfish, after everything?
"You're back! Come on in, Al. Ed. Wash your hands, alright? I made you something to eat."

He glances at Al out of the corner of his eye, trying to ignore the sick feeling of dread in the pit of his stomach.
"Actually, we... we have something we need to tell you, mom."

Reaching out beside him, he grasped Ed's hand and held it tightly enough that his knuckles were going white, both needing and giving comfort to his big brother.
"It's about... Brother's arm and leg."
