To say that Al was nervous of this conversation would be a vast understatement, he was legitimately terrified. How could they face their mother after what they had done, after what they had let themselves become in their grief at her passing?

She would be so ashamed...

But he can't, no... won't, back down. They had to move forwards, they decided that a long time ago, looking back at regrets was something they couldn't afford. If they didn't tell her, they would spend their whole time with her here in a state of guilt. If anyone deserved to know the truth, it was her. She was the reason for everything, she was their mother. Whatever the outcome, though, Ed and Al would face it side by side as they always did.

Walking into the house he had woken up in only a short time ago, Ed by his side like a (smaller) shadow, he looked about for their mother as though worried she would have vanished into thin air.

"...Mom?"

Trisha was exactly where her son had left her -- in the kitchen. She had done what she found therapeutic since waking up in Mayfield... gone digging into the fridge and cupboards, and found the ingredients for something delicious to make the boys. She had a feeling they would be coming back, after all -- and it would be together.

It should always be together.

Therefore, the smells that greeted them were familiar and warm... a nice late breakfast to warm them up after the chill of a Mayfield winter. She's poking her head out and giving Alphonse and Edward a wave, wiping her hands on her apron and trying not to look at all concerned for them. Every instinct in her has her wishing to bridge the gap between them and gather them both up into her arms tight as she could.

...It's so good to have them both here with her. Is that selfish, after everything?

"You're back! Come on in, Al. Ed. Wash your hands, alright? I made you something to eat."

Al wasn't alone in that. This has been on his mind ever sine she arrived. What was he going to say? How could he tell her? What would she do when she found out? She was going to be so disappointed in them, in him. He promised to take care of his little brother, would never let him get hurt, but after she died they through caution to the wind and paid the price.

He glances at Al out of the corner of his eye, trying to ignore the sick feeling of dread in the pit of his stomach.

"Actually, we... we have something we need to tell you, mom."

He is hit with a wave of nostalgia as they enter the house, the scent of Mom's cooking not quite like anyone else's ever had been. It smells like her, it smells like home and his heart lurches in his chest.

Reaching out beside him, he grasped Ed's hand and held it tightly enough that his knuckles were going white, both needing and giving comfort to his big brother.

"It's about... Brother's arm and leg."
