Supernatural 4.04

Oct 10, 2008 08:49

I really need to buy the digital converter thingie for my TV so I can watch episodes as they air, instead of waiting and downloading it. I keep ending up getting out of bed early on Friday mornings to watch what everyone else watched last night. So yes, here is my reaction, fresh as always!

In short, I liked it, but didn't squee very much )

I don't like Dean punching Sam. He's done it a bunch now and I know that that's how Dean reacts to things that terrify him--he punches them. Still, it makes me sad. And Sam just stands there and takes it. Besides, Sam's not the kind to punch back, so it just seems so unequal. But Sam hurts Dean in different ways. LIKE LYING TO HIS FACE.

I actually don't mind that. I think Dean reined himself back. And, frankly, Sam kind of deserved it. He tries to tell himself he's lying to protect Dean, or as if it somehow makes him less freakish if he doesn't say it out loud. Sometimes he needs something to hit him in the face. Okay, maybe not quite so literally.

The parallels were good, but a little anvilicious at times. American TV can't be subtle, I guess, but I wish it could.

I wish someone would recommend them to lay off the Parallel Hammer a bit. I'm all for a good parallel, but if every hunt has some deeper personal meaning attached to it, it's gonna get old.

Yeah, it seemed perfectly in character and everything, and there was nothing wrong with it in the context of the show. This is what Dean does, and Sam definitely deserved it. I just...don't like it. It makes me sad. In the same way that the lying and the general schism between them makes me sad.

if every hunt has some deeper personal meaning attached to it, it's gonna get old.

Yes, yes, this. SHOW SOME RESTRAINT, GUYS. Less is more, and more is too much.

LOL, isn't being sad the point of this show? ;)

Oh, and I love that Dean called Castiel "Cas." That is so going to be in every fanfic featuring the two of them, ever. I suspect I'll get quite bored of it, but right now it only amuses me.

Oh, and I cringed because I could almost literally hear the clatter of fangirly keyboards frantically typing "Cas" in their latest fic/icon/[insert medium of choice here]. Heh. It did strike me as odd, though. It's not like Castiel is a terribly long name, nor is it like he and Dean are the bestest of buds.

Hee, yeah. I took it as another sign of Dean's continued disrespect, really. He'll still badmouth Castiel behind his back for as long as he can get away with it.

Heh, but you know that's not how most will read that. ;)

Sam's faces this entire episode were so hurty. But it was like old Sam again, who I've missed.

It's less about the fact that Show used a parallel.... but more that it's a parallel that we've seen countless times already. That's what gets annoying.

I didn't mind Dean punching Sam. I mean, it's extreme... but so was what Sam did. It was a huge betrayal. And after the second punch, Dean dropped his bag, almost like he was waiting for Sam to fight back. (The punch in "Bloodlust" was a little more uncalled for, at least compared to this one, methinks.)

Yes! Old Sam! Moral, looking for gray, sticking it up for the ordinary folks Sam! How I missed him.

True dat, about the repetition of the SAME parallel. I like parallels. But Sam has been compared to the MotW many, many times, and it never ends up going all that well.

I didn't MIND Dean punching Sam, really. It was called for and made sense. It just made me go ouch.

I loved the Cas bit, but the best part was that secrets are finally out... and Travis was a cool dude if a little obsessed!

Dean's reaction to the secrets broke my heart and Sam looked so desolate to have been found with his hand in the cookie jar

Yeah, I'm totally happy that the secrets are in the open. I'm glad they didn't wait till the middle of the season or whatever.

And yes, that scene in the motel was so intense.

*very* intense i almost expected one of them to go storming out and be by himself...

very nice that was to have the confrontation early!

Also, I want Dean to have more flashbacks. Because I like PTSD and I like Dean, so it would be like ice cream with fudge sauce. The cherry would be a hug from Sam.

YES.

I agree, the not knowing exactly what has been going on between Sam and Ruby is unpleasant. Sure, the demon theyr were exorcising could have just been making stuff up to throw in their faces, but it's alarming to think he might not be. Ick.

I'm already quite happy with just the little bit of PTSD we have going, but definitely more is better.
