In which Laura is pleasantly surprised by a television show and reflects on the personality of rats.

I was going to post this yesterday, or maybe Saturday, but I was...busy. See, I have this problem, where I get really into a TV show and can't stop watching. I didn't think that it would happen this weekend--I seriously thought I would spend those two days cleaning house and catching up on some projects and maybe even spend some time with my family ( Read more... )

Heck, yeah. In My Time of Dying has to be one of the best episodes of television I've ever seen. The scene in the S1 season finale had my heart falling all over itself for Dean, but that episode cemented it. I look forward to Season 3, too. (I've already taken steps to procure it, so I can keep watching without missing anything.)

And it's a good thing the first ep of S4 is out already, because I think the suspense would drive me nuts. I've been avoiding spoilers as much as possible, but it's hard to miss the fact Something Really Really Bad happens to Deano, with even a cursory glance around the SPN fannish areas of the internet.

I don't know yet if I'll get fannish to the point of writing fanfic and stuff, but I've already read a couple, and that says volumes. I like lots of shows that don't compel me to go out and seek fanfic and other fandom stuff, and some of them are really, really good. There's just something about the brotherly relationship that gets me, along with Dean's struggle to be strong while hiding so much emotional ( ... )

Part of the Dean appeal for me definitely is rooted in the Big Sister thing. I'm an older sibling myself. So while I might not be jumping in bed with every guy I see or be a PITA sometimes, I understand Dean's core personality. I understand that burden. I understand that it's all about image and not showing what is really inside. I *get* Dean and every single choice he makes, even the bad ones, I understand where he is coming from. And to be honest, if I were him I might make those same choices myself and that is scary. I see a lot of my brother in Sam so the brothers really hit home for me. It just took some time for the show to grab me ( ... )

I just finished watching Heart, the werewolf one, and I'm waiting till I have time to watch all five of the last episodes in a row, since it looks like they're a complete arc. Probably Tuesday or Wednesday night, since I spend Monday night with friends ( ... )

Aw, so the rats are preeners? Or just looking for a snack? That's so cool. (I'm asking because Kiwi likes to preen me, but I have to be careful since she thinks such objects as scabs and moles cry out for removal, LOL.)

I don't watch SPN, but as for the thing about all the women being gorgeous... I hear ya. It is really tiring. After a while, beauty isn't beautiful anymore.

Mostly I think they're just looking for snacks when they lick my face, but Wallace has definitely shown signs of being a groomer. In the right mood he'll lick my fingers while I'm petting him, kind of a reciprocal love fest. But he's so young and active that he doesn't want to sit still for long. :)

More and more I'm noticing things about television that were never apparent to me before. I'm becoming a lot more analytical, and while I don't think that's a bad thing, it does make it harder for me to just sit still and ENJOY something, without constantly thinking, "This plot is dumb and predictable. This dialogue is laughable. Why is everyone white and hot? Where are the women who have their own stories and are not just serving the men?"

Though it does make me all the more gleeful when I come across a truly GOOD show that avoids most of this, like Battlestar Galactica and the new Doctor Who.

Aw, the rats sound so adorable! I was looking at a big pile of snoozing rats at a pet store the other day. They're very cute.

I found as I got older I got more critical with TV because after a while you've seen it all and realize - that's it! All that stuff that was new to you because you were young and inexperienced is just getting recycled into "new stuff" that's not really new. The world is a boring place. *sigh*

But I did get to where I can shove the inner critic aside for a while to enjoy something that I have to admit is slightly problematic or complete crap, as the case may be. Especially if I like the cast.
