Re: the GED: not to harsh your moment of empathy, but I really liked that. I know several people who got their GEDs rather than graduating, and generally it wasn't a failure, but a choice--they had something they wanted to do, but they also wanted to have that mark of accomplishment, of having learned what they needed to learn, so they got their GED before running off into the world. I totally see Dean as that sort of guy, especially after the flashback ep last season.

That's a good point, thank you for that perspective. Dean is definitely strong enough to CHOOSE to basically drop out of school and seek a GED because hunting and helping his dad was more important to him. I just wish that he had gotten that moment of acknowledgement, however brief, even from strangers, that he had accomplished something good. I don't think Dean gets near enough celebration.

Re: Dean's GED - is that journal compliant, or no? I keep thinking no, and I keep forgetting to look it up, lol. Now that I've asked you, maybe I'll remember.

Re: Bobby - LOL!! MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS OH, HAI PROF. X!!!! *waves*

I never got the journal, so I have no idea. YOU WILL HAVE TO TELL ME FOR NOW YOU HAVE MADE ME CURIOUS.

Professor X-- ::sporfle:: Bobby pretty much already is the Oracle, though, collector and information and central communication center for all the superheroes--I mean hunters--in the world.

While I'm sad that Dean didn't get to graduate, I also kind of really like that he somehow thought it was important enough to actually finish and get the GED.

Oh, that's true, and definitely a mark of Dean's determination and stick-to-it-iveness. ;) It makes me curious if John encouraged that, or if he even cared. I bet Sam encouraged him, though.

Like I mentioned to izhilzha above, I just wish that Dean had gotten that moment of acknowledgement, however brief, even from strangers, that he had accomplished something good. Dean doesn't get near enough celebration, by my reckoning.

It stands for General Education Development. For people who can't finish high school for some reason, they can take equivalency tests to prove that they know the material, and then they get the certificate in the mail. It's equal to a high school diploma and you can use it for applying for jobs and such, but I think culturally it does carry just a bit of stigma, even so, because it's "less" than a regular diploma. That's my feeling, anyway, though certainly plenty of incredible people have GEDs instead of a diploma from an institution.

It's funny, but when he insisted on mentioning his GED, it just made me laugh. Mostly because that's so Dean. In thinking of it now, it seems natural to me that he didn't finish actual high school but opted out on a GED instead. Because it's the equivalent of saying, "hey, I didn't do it YOUR way, but I got it done. So get off my back." And how Dean is that? ;)

Hee! Yeah, it's totally awesome that for his pep talk Dean goes searching in his mind for "let's see, hmm, what's a concrete accomplishment I can hold up as an example of how amazing I am? HA! I have a GED!"

:D Yes, yes, very Dean, as well "bucking the system" like that. Total NYAH in the face of the world.

I just wish he had really believed the words coming out of his own mouth, though it was strangely adorable that he put all that on just for Bobby's benefit.

The thing that gets me about him is that, while he says he doesn't believe that's possible and he said it to bolster Bobby, he still went back to that speech he always gives. The much more honest one that's always at the core of him that says, "I know there's no hope. Everything's going to fall apart. But you won't see me giving up. No way, no how." And... that right there is just another reason to adore his silly behind. :p
