a call for bright ideas!

So I've been reduced to reading through the list of UNC-Chapel Hill graduate schools and trying to intuit from their names whether they're A.) something I'd enjoy, and B.) something you can get a job in with actual decent pay, so I wouldn't just waste two years of time & tuition. I've been looking at Library Science, but with the economy the way it ( Read more... )

So newspapers are dead, right? It's time to pioneer the journalism of the future, while you are young and hungry and can stand to eat rice and beans.

Newspapers may be dying, but journalism isn't! People love to read in depth articles about obscure things. Sort of New Yorker style. you should write those! Those are all the fun ones to write anyway. Sell ads. Sell t-shirts: Chelsea Kellner, reporter of the future!

But articles cost money to make, Akiva? Yeah! Huh! How about that? You have to research and afford to eat and no one talks to some random girl reporter and blah blah blah.

You're right. But THIS IS YOUR CHANCE! What do you really care about? Come up with an idea, maybe put it on http://www.kickstarter.com/. Live the dream!

I'm taking your suggestion and clipping it to my mental refrigerator with a gigantic butterfly magnet for when I've recovered a bit from burnout. Did you see the SF Panorama from McSweeney's when it came out last year? THAT, I could get behind.

Also, you are the king of radness and positivity. Thanks for the pep talk :)

BTW, are you still in SF? I might be wandering that direction in May.

That's exactly the sort of thing I was talking about! There is an appetite for genuine journalism out there, but no one is quite sure what to do about it. I kept trying to buy the Panorama (their headquarters/pirate store are around the street from me) and it kept being sold out. But the McSweeney's iPhone app included a bunch of excerpts which I did see.

I am definitely still in San Francisco. Come visit! It is a happening town.

Now I just have to figure out what to do with my life.

What's been worrying me lately is that I've stopped feeling enthusiastic about much of anything for the past several months. Which makes me think I'm burned-out and in need of a career change, but makes it difficult to pick anything.

I've been thinking a lot about the career = passion vs. career = resource thing. Keep thinking back to this conversation I had at Salt with this kid who maintained that you could either be successful or you could be happy, and you have to pick one, because it takes so much to be truly successful in a career that you generally have to sacrifice happiness to get there. I.e., it takes a hell of a lot to be Diane Sawyer (or even Judith Miller), and you can't give a hell of a lot in one area without giving up a hell of a lot in another. Problem is, the key to success in so many jobs lies in networking. I HATE networking. And at this point, I'm feeling like the success (even if it came) just wouldn't be worth it at this point if this is how I'm left feeling.

More maybe when it's not 1 a.m. :)
