I've learned to appreciate audiobooks and podcasts since William was born. I've always been a big multi-tasker, but never fully understood the appeal of audiobooks. Well, now that I've rarely the time to read or more exactly, the ability to hold a book while doing other things, I love listening to the things while I'm doing my cleaning or ( Read more... )

Well you've more than likely read all the classics by now but I can't recommend Dickens enough. Also, the French authors you should be able to get translations for, that I think you'll enjoy include:
Emile Zola: Les Rougon-Macquart series
Roger Martin du Gard: The Thibaults series
Marcel Pagnol: Le Temps des secrets, Le Temps des amours, La Gloire de mon père and Le château de ma mère.

You said you're not into sci-fi: do you like fantasy?

This is good news, as I've just downloaded two books, and I wasn't sure how I'd enjoy reading by headphone. ;)

Taking them on the road tomorrow, to drown out my family listen in the car via iPod.

I've heard that Stephen King reading his own stuff is pretty awesome. Of course, I'm picky about my King books. There are a few I would adore hearing on audio. "The Stand", "Rose Madder", "Insomnia", "Dolores Claiborne", to name a few. They're not really Sci-Fi or horror, even though they get classified as such most of the time. Really, all I've listed except "Dolores Claiborne" seem to be a mix of suspense, drama, and fantasy.

But he's not for everyone. "The Stand" on audio would be my first recommendation, followed by "Rose Madder". But, this is only if it is Stephen King himself reading them. I don't even know if he read those himself or not.

I'm thinking about getting those two myself.

Have fun with whatever you do find, though! Sounds really great.

Full length audiobooks cost a bomb over here, at least - downloading them may make them cheaper, at least. I love audiobooks for the fact that you can do something else while you listen too. I've also had travel sickness, as have most of my family, so the long long journeys between the UK and Italy, for example, tend to get filled with a book or several.

Personal favourites are Tony Robinson reading the discworld series, but that might not appeal, or crime stories by people like Agatha Christie, among others. We tend to buy them in motorway service stations, so they're never very deep. I tend to think that's a good thing though...I never WANT anything too deep from an audiobook because it's guaranteed I'm doing something else at the same time!
