I fear I am getting sick, but am hoping that my throat is just sore from...something else. I haven't been properly sick in a really long time (like...a few years, I'm thinking). Thank christ Jim was able to add me to his insurance yesterday just in case ( Read more... )

It depends on a whole heap of things such as if you've worked in the last two years or not, whether you have a partner and whether they're working and how much savings you have.

Some info is here

That sounds very complex! Ours technically is based on your salary over the previous 18 months, but I think you'd have to not make very much at all to not receive the full benefit. I'm very glad ours isn't dependent then on your partner and savings.

Well if you've been working for I think up to years at a strech before becoming unemployed you can get JSA(Contibutions based) which is purely based on your NI contributions and doesn't depend on partner or savings, so you can have £100,000 in the bank in the bank and it won't matter for that one. Unfortunately it only last 26 weeks . The other one can last years but is means tested.

Ours says it goes from 14 to 45 weeks. I guess different people qualify for different lengths of payment. Also (copied from EI site):

The basic benefit rate is 55% of your average insured earnings up to a yearly maximum insurable amount of $40,000...a maximum payment of $423 per week...

You could receive a higher benefit rate if you are in a low-income family - net income up to a maximum of $25,921 per year - with children and you or your spouse receive the Canada Child Tax Benefit (CCTB).

CDN $423/week isn't a lot more than you'll be getting.

Hope you don't get sick! But don't worry too much about the germies and Will. The more Will gets now, the less he gets later.. and breastfeeding has a minimizing effect on the cold. He won't be as sick as he would without breastfeeding. Although it's never fun looking after a baby with a stuffed up nose. :(

I think technically the length and amount of ours is dependent on how long you've worked and how much you made. But basically if you were making an OK salary and had been steadily employed, you'll get the whole shmear. I'm not surprised yours can last for longer though! Do you know if you're taxed on yours? We are, which is ridiculous to me; you pay taxes to pay into it and then are taxed on it when you receive it. *headdesk*

I know that Will is benefiting from the breastfeeding; I just don't look forward to the crankiness that I'm sure will ensue. :(

Yep, they took taxes off mine when I was on mat leave. Annoying as hell. You're out of work, you've paid into the system your entire working life just in case you ever needed assistance. So now... Your hard-earned benefits which you paid for with taxes are taxed?

Poopyheads!

They are stingy here, too. While I was on mat leave with Evan, my employer gave everyone a $500 bonus, and were nice enough to remember me. Like a good girl, I notified EI, thinking they might need to know for tax purposes. No, they demanded I pay them back... $500. So much for the bonus!

Asked She Who Knows All Things Financial and CA does six months and max amount allowable is based on the highest pay you earned in a quarter the previous 12 months. They then plop that into a formula to get your amount paid out.

So yours is basically the same as ours (it technically is based on your earnings, but most everyone that earns an ok amount of money gets the full benefit).

I am just so not going to do that to you. You know roughly why.

Still, at least you're getting paid to take care of William.

I'm just so not going to go into that here either.

But look on the bright side, living with the Swiss sucks and you're probably better of where you are. Let's move to the Hebrides and start that sheep farm.

Yes, I'm planning on totally ignoring it. Hows that?

I was rather hoping it would go unnoticed, at least at work anyway.

Birthdays = One year closer to death

Cheery, aren't I?

Not to make you feel bad...and a little late but here in Ontario we get a full year with pay I think it is only a fraction of your pay...and they are looking into extending it to 18 months. Plus mommy and daddy can split the time if mommy wants to go back to work daddy can take paternity leave for what ever time is left over.
