Important continuity question for Merlin Missy. (Please Help!)

Jun 21, 2006 15:50

I was reading Merlin Missy's journal about how the new Gargoyles comic is out (my comic book guy is saving it for me) and Merlin Missy referred to it as new continuity. I LOVE continuity but it sometimes confuses me. MM, one of your complaints about Destroyer was that we didn't know for sure if Lois and Jimmy survived ( Read more... )

True, but he wasn't the ONLY person involved in making Gargoyles what it was. It feels kind of arbitrary to me to take one person's word on the entire series over the dozens of folks who worked so hard on the original series and TGC.

However if Micheal Reaves, Lydia Marano, Frank Paur and Cary Bates, etc., all agree I can live with it.

My take: canon is what airs. In certain cases (the "Serenity" prequel comics, frex) canon can include print media, with the acceptance that not everyone in the fandom will agree ( ... )

So you're saying that canon is personal for each person? That makes a lot of sense to me. That way, if I like the new Gargoyles comic I can consider that canon while TGC can still be official.

And yeah, canon being what airs is usually how I go about it myself. One more question: What if one "official" continuity contradicts another? That is one of the biggest problems I had with Brainiac Attacks. And it will also be a problem if Gargoyles came back with a new DTV or series that contradicted the Goliath Chronicles.

Networks suits are SO frustrating.

I still don't get this "Chosen violated Fray" thing, as the way I saw it, the last few episodes of season seven acknowledged Fray more than anything.

To make things easier on myself, I'll say "TV canon" or "comic canon" because a lot of the time, they don't contradict each other.

But as far as I'm concerned, if Greg Weisman continues the Gargoyles story or Joss Whedon continues the Buffy saga, unless it's contradicted by something in their original medium in the future, that's what will happen to the characters.

Even Joss has acknowledged Chosen contradicted Fray. In the flashback to (presumably) Buffy and the final apocalypse only one Slayer was said to have been involved. I find it highly unlikely that every single Slayer except one was dead by the time of the "final" battle.

Also the comic book went back to the mythology of there only being one Slayer at a time.

I'm sure Joss could explain these discrepancies in a future Buffyverse project but WITHOUT that explaination it's really hard to try to justify both Bufyy AND Fray.

What, did Joss lose his imagination?

I do need to read it again since I still find it likely, but I assumed that Buffy was the only Slayer fighting the last of the demons. Maybe the other Slayers (already few in number) were recovering or helping others? Was Buffy definitely the last Slayer? Maybe Arkonn just got his information wrong.

The one Slayer at a time thing, though...wasn't the balance already messed up? I feel like I'm misremembering now.

"What, did Joss lose his imagination?"

More like he acknowledged the new idea for Chosen didn't fit with the comic and is looking forward to doing a new Fray comic someday to try to explain it away. He's a comic geek and knows about retcons as much as anybody.

My point is that Joss is willing to make Fray fit Buffy but not the other way around.
