Important continuity question for Merlin Missy. (Please Help!)

I was reading Merlin Missy's journal about how the new Gargoyles comic is out (my comic book guy is saving it for me) and Merlin Missy referred to it as new continuity. I LOVE continuity but it sometimes confuses me. MM, one of your complaints about Destroyer was that we didn't know for sure if Lois and Jimmy survived ( Read more... )

My take: canon is what airs. In certain cases (the "Serenity" prequel comics, frex) canon can include print media, with the acceptance that not everyone in the fandom will agree.

"Gargoyles" ended for most of the fandom with "The Journey," and quite a few people end it at "Hunter's Moon" for their personal canon. I'm good with discounting most or all of "The Goliath Chronicles" as it was a different production team on a different network. That we have a comic series means the fandom as a whole now has an optional second continuity to follow instead. I'm going to check out the new continuity and decide if I intend to accept this as my personal canon, or just decide what I wrote in the "Consequences" series is my personal canon, full stop. Officially, TGC is canon. In reality, mileage is going to vary all over the place.

And as for a comic by the team? Maybe. But probably not. Something put into one of the tie-in comics can be retconned by a DVD a year later. I've never read "Harley and Ivy" and I haven't seen "Brainiac Attacks" so I can't say.

That help?

So you're saying that canon is personal for each person? That makes a lot of sense to me. That way, if I like the new Gargoyles comic I can consider that canon while TGC can still be official.

And yeah, canon being what airs is usually how I go about it myself. One more question: What if one "official" continuity contradicts another? That is one of the biggest problems I had with Brainiac Attacks. And it will also be a problem if Gargoyles came back with a new DTV or series that contradicted the Goliath Chronicles.
