It's still pretty cool. For a movie where nothing much happens with the main characters (the action revolves around the people surrounding them) I didn't find the detour that bothersome.
On The Doctor's Daughter: her resurrection baffled me a bit too. My guess is that, as the Doctor said, she was like him but not quite the same, so her regeneration didn't work quite the same way.
Trivia: she was played by the daughter of Peter Davison.
Yeah, I made it apparent in my review that I disliked the 'swiping' from the film. I can't believe there might be a 4th and 5th one in the future. The 'clips' show was a funny nod as noted to some past live action television shows. Drives the fans nuts, but I appreciated how they wove in some comic book covers in there.
If there IS a fourth and fifth film I won't see it unless all of the original actors return. With the exception of the James Bond films recasts in movie series never work.
For all of the hype Superman Returns got, since they followed the original films continuity so slavishly it sucked. It never got a chance to be judged on it's own merits so of course it looked bad in comparison.
The movie swipes made my eyes roll (particularly the cage match...really? THAT made it in? and I hate genetically altered spiders), but I loved, loved, loved the origin. Ed Asner as Uncle Ben? That was great! Peter felt more like a whole character with a history after this episode, and I love head trips that take characters back to the past (it's a little similar to "Orpheus" from Angel). So as far as origin episodes go, I think this was great.
That Beavis and Butthead review was funny, just because of all the innuendo. I saw the movie in theatres and thought it was great, but I haven't watched it in years.
I wouldn't mind a head trip that told us something new about the characters but this particular one told us nothing that we hadn't already kind of assumed. Orpheus was able to do that so well because the Buffyverse is an original franchise whereas cartoons based on comic books sometimes tend to follow them too slavishly. In this case it followed the movie too slavishly.

They're actually going to do a live-ation version? It is going to suck big-time.

Live action: well, apparently Mike Judge is helming it...
