I think one thing Pirates had over Early Man was that the Victorian setting allowed a wider range of historical jokes, while caveman-related humour is... rather more limited.
But then, I kind of suspect that the genericness might have been the point. Aardman's been struggling internationally for a while, and I think Early Man was meant as an easily exportable film. Caveman jokes are pretty universal, soccer is played almost everywhere (besides the US), so caveman playing football is a premise that can translate around the world pretty well. With that in mind, I think it did a good job: a perfectly solid kids' cartoon that won't embarrass the adults in the audience.

I agree. But it's still Aardman's weakest film so far. If it wasn't Aardman I probably wouldn't be so hard on it in the first place.

For the record, soccer is definitely played in the U.S.. It's pretty popular here even if we don't have professional leagues for it.
