They even spelled the title wrong on the back

Will there ever be a Beowulf movie that doesn't suck?

I had high hopes for a movie with Stellan Skarsgård and Gerard Butler. It even had Tony Curran, who was in The 13th Warrior, which was basically Beowulf but Michael Crichton styles. But I'm halfway through and it's not really doing anything for me.

I should point out here that I like Beowulf ( Read more... )

Yes, there will, later this year. Directed by Robert Zemeckis in performance-capture mode (supposedly they've eliminated the uncanny-valley in there somehow) and starring Ray Winstone, Crispin Glover, Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovich, Brendan Gleeson, Robin Wright Penn, Alison Lohman, and Angelina Jolie. Written by Neil Gaiman and Roger "I Co-Wrote Pulp Fiction" Avary. It's gonna be an R-rated movie, too, with an NC-17 version in IMAX cinemas in the States, anyway. Sound good? Certainly does to me.

Yeah, I guess it's a pretty good pool of talent working on that film. Set reports say: the CGI is flawless. We'll see. But yeah. It's one of my more highly-anticipated films this year.

There does seem to be some sort of curse on any Beowulf movie that makes them automatically suck. Which is a pity, because it's a great poem, with enough material for two or three movies. I haven't seen any of the recent ones (there have been, I think, three Beowulf movies in the past couple of years) yet, because they'd probably not impress me.

Oh, that Christopher Lambert one sucked.

If you want to see a really *horrendous* Christopher Lambert semi-medieval film though, go get out 'Druids' sometime.

How 'bout that one that had the trailer on the House of the Dead DVD? (or was it Alone in the Dark?) Oh yeah. Lamberty goodness.
