You made a mistake going from line 2 to line 4 of you attempt (because I don't exactly understand what your symbols in line 3 mean). The error is on the left side of line 4. Allow me to rearrange line 2 to help you see this ...

301 - 86x + 34 = 50x - 205 + 744
301 + 34 - 86x = 50x + 539
