Hidden Manufacturers

Has anyone ever figured out what the deal is with the Hidden Manufacturers in the game

I think they're the manufacturers that are used by enemies but aren't available to the player, unless via PC cheats. It makes sense to me that the developers might want to be able to give certain stats and skins to enemies only.

I've seen screenshots of the Batarian armors on a Shepard, tho, so they exist.

Batarian State Arms was in the game, I got their "Terminator" assault rifles quite often. Haven't come across anything by the other three, though.
