Anything canon can be found in the mass effect wiki, which has all the info from the codex and more. Otherwise, yeah, it's the SSV Normandy Make Shit Up :D
Ah, that's a good idea. I usually don't even delve into those unless I have some time to kill (and I'm not writing, which is... well, like, never :P) because I know I'll get stuck there forever! ;) But maybe now that I know I have an actual, concrete purpose for getting lost for hours, I'll brave it... heheh....
Also, I just remembered this, there are some interesting posts in the memories of this comm about "sexual ecology" or something. They're very interesting (mostly about alien biology and how it might relate to cultural norms) and might give you some ideas.
Most of us read through the wiki and/or codex and then just bridge the gaps with our own logical conclusions. The Cerberus Daily News blurbs from ME2 (which are also all documented on the wiki) help give us short glimpses of alien culture (Hey cool turians have their own sport called 'claw ball').
What!? I never saw the blurb about claw ball! Damn! I will have to look those up on the Wiki. Every time I saw those blurbs in my game they were always the same thing, which I found annoying. Somehow I must have missed all the cool ones. Boo. Glad they are on the Wiki!
Wiki and BSN (surprisingly) are both good sources. Some of the roleplayers at CND also have a good grasp of the canon alien culture what little of it there is.
