I told myself I wasn't going to do this, but I just cannot let what happened to Jacob (and my poor Faith Shepard) lie. Here's a brief (very rough) summary of how, with the addition of one message and the changing of one or two dialogues, I would salvage the Jacob romance.

Actually some of the locker dialogue and pre-Ilos dialogue can indicate that it's serious for Shepard, too. But I can't blame the guy for wanting a straightforward, plain answer.
On the other hand, you would think there would have been some sort of acknowledgement/differentiation of that line for faithful FemSheps (and DudeSheps? I've heard, though cannot confirm, that the game will recognize the modded ME1 DudeShep/Kaidan romance) simply because those conversations did happen.

The most facepalm inducing thing is that there are conversations with Liara/Ashley/Kaidan earlier in the game that allow you to continue/stop the romance.
From my FemShep's POV, Liara asks if they're still together, to which Shepard says yes (and subsequent scenes treat them as a couple), then later in the game Shepard herself 'reveals' that she wants to be more than friends. =/

YES! The game recognizes the faithful Kaidanmance with little things: Kaidanfaithful Shepard tells Kaidan on Mars that she still feels the same way for him; faithful Shep has a unique way she reacts after Kaidan's head gets bashed in; after the first nightmare, Shepard can say she's upset Kaidan got hurt (this option isn't available even for single DudeSheps who intend to romance Kaidan, so I'm assuming it's romance specific); Liara bolstered my FemShep and was nothing more than a friend; the only people who even hit on my Shepard were Allers and Traynor (well, and Vega. But Liara didn't). The way Kaidan and Shepard's models interact with each other are romance specific in almost every scene they have together.
And then (even after telling him verbatim "Cerberus didn't change me. Or the way I feel about you.") my romance flag trip is "I can't hide what I feel for you anymore, and I don't want to."? I'm definitely on the side of bug/lazy writing.

*FLAIL* I just finished up an ME1 runthrough of ME1 with a Sheploo in-ME3-Kaidanmancer. Headcanon for ME1 was that he was keeping it 'professional' given how much Kaidan was all SO, ONE TIME, AT BIO CAMP, THERE WAS THIS PRETTY GIRL, AND-- Ahem.
But if I could do his romance right from ME1... Hmmmm. A quick search on Youtube found this video, a modded romance thru ME1 & 2 but.. more importantly over here is a 'modded save import' where it does seem to recognize the mod.
I could mod a save real quick and fire up the demo if you want me to check?

But I'm sure there are other members of the comm who would be interested in the findings (and I'd think that would even be something, if true, that would merit its own entry in the community). :-)

He and my canon femShep unexpectedly (for me) clicked so well as characters that I can't see either of them with anyone else (or without the other). They just go, and trying to pair him with any other Shepard honestly makes the back of my brain go "The fuck?! HE'S CHEATING ON (CANONSHEPARD)! D-:"
