We actually had a huge post when it initally leaked back in November, and mods have asked that any information regarding the demo and any other leaks from it be contained in the Leakgate Spoilerama Quarantine post.
And real quick as to Kaidan: the Major Alenko Anderson calls for is Kaidan. We know Kaidan was a Staff Commander in ME2, but it's believed that he's been promoted again to keep him roughly on par with Ashley's promotion from Staff Lieutenant in ME2 to Lieutenant Commander in ME3.
Since this isn't part of the Leakgate text (as in, the full game script) itself, is now only a few months from release, and most importantly only covers the game's intro, I think we can let this pass. Also, the OP put it under plentiful spoiler warnings. No one should be taken by surprise on this.
In the past, we've always allowed this kind of thing with the right warnings. The reason we took action on Leakgate was it covered the entire game.
Ah. My fault. I thought everything that came from that was "under quarantine". Sorry! And as to the spoiler warnings: I'm good. I eat spoilers up like candy.
No worries. Leakgate was an unusual case... too much too early, you know? Normally I'm all over spoilers too, but it was too much even for me. I don't want to know everything that'll happen months in advance. But an intro like this is fine IMO. It's just the first few minutes, so it won't ruin the entire game for anyone. And, it's easily skipped for those that want to skip it. My major concern with Leakgate was that spoilerphobes would get info they didn't want dropped into random chatter in places like SLF. A clearly marked spoiler post is usually better protected.
Hehe, lookit all the cute pre-viz capture grays. And creepy robo-voice stand-in voice acting!
The extended timeline once again makes it a bit odd that the VS remains out of contact during all that time... but I guess in this case we can hand-wave it as Spectre duties. I'm sure they can come up with reasons why a new Spectre would have maintain radio silence for a while, or that contacting a disgraced former officer might look bad in the political arena.
Still, though, the degree to which the Alliance is caught with its collective pants down is kind of embarrassing. I'm hoping Hackett has some Sekrit Plans he's been hiding up his sleeve, so he doesn't come off as badly as the Committee idiot brigade.
It makes complete sense to me that the Alliance would keep their disgraced poster boy/girl from their new Spectre; they wouldn't want their politically correct/didn't-kill-a-shitload-of-batarians to associate with their former CO. And, yes, they do have their duties as both a Spectre and an Alliance officer, and it's very easy to keep information on a need-to-know basis to isolate them - Cerberus did the same thing quite skillfully.
Yeah, the Alliance does get terribly blindsided, but again, it's human nature - and we don't know how High Command at Arcturus (wonder if we'll see Arcturus Station in ME3) censored all the information from the Battle of the Citadel. And if you put yourself on the outside looking in, it does all sound like a bunch of hooey - giant sentient machines bent on wiping out all organic civilization? Evil Overlords who harvest life for their own nefarious purposes? Sounds like something straight out of a Japanese anime to me!
I agree, except they believe Shepard sufficiently to reduce the punishment for killing thousands of people to a slap on the wrist. If they really thought Shepard was totally out to lunch, they would have brought the hammer down. So there's a bizarre kind of contradiction going on. I'm not saying it's totally unbelievable given how spread out and politicized Alliance command structure must be, but I still find it somewhat pathetic.
But I guess that's how Our Hero looks more badass. ;)

Yes, this is why I was very disappointed the game didn't open with a dramatic courtroom confrontation - it'd be so much more intense that way. Instead, it looks like people in high places bailed Shepard out - a reduced punishment instead of execution or handing him/her over to the batarians.
However, one could also argue that Shepard is a walking, talking repository of information no other Alliance soldier has - that's why they weren't willing to waste it by killing him/her. Sure, they could study omni-tool data (if Shepard didn't record every single moment of time in Cerberus/against the Collectors, I'd be disappointed), but Shepard is also the one human who stood against a Reaper and the Collectors - and lived to tell about it

I wonder if there's more to the intro? It just seems to start off rather abruptly with the Mass Effect 3 title screen, and then move into the walk-and-talk cinematics. With ME1 we got Udina and Anderson's voice-over about Shepard's background, then the text crawl about the history and explanation of mass effect fields which lead into the title screen, and then it went to a cinematic where we follow Shepard through the Normandy as Joker narrates with pilot-talk. In ME2, it was the opening with Miranda and TIM once again talking about Shepard's decisions and background, fade to text, another walking around the Normandy scene with Joker's narration and then the attack on the Normandy - we don't get the ME2 title screen until after Shepard dies. So it's possible we may still get to see a courtroom-esque scene with the Defense Committee where they rehash all the things that Shepard did in ME1 and ME2, if they're following the usual formula. And I love that every game now opens with a pan around a control room area with lots of people

It's not the Normandy, it looks like an Alliance fighter with "SX-3" printed on it. It's too angular for the Normandy, and there's a clear cockpit in front.
It's always possible there's more. IMO the pre-viz grays, jumps and missing sync make it pretty clear this is an early cut.
Yes, that kid is indeed playing with a Normandy SR-2 in Alliance colors! I'm glad I wasn't the only one who caught that! Lovely bit of foreshadowing, there

I know :/ - I'm used to the no-nonsense, tough-as-nails, let's-get-it-done Ash. And that outfit, WTFery is that?! She looks like a reject from the old Star Trek original series. I know it's just the combination of her too-short tunic and the white pants, but I swear they look like a miniskirt and go-go boots.
They dooooo. And the hair. WHY the hair? That's always gonna bother me. Ash is a soldier, and if she's also a Spectre, that makes her part of the ELITE, and.... hair like that is just an accident waiting to happen. *nitpicknitpicknitpick*
Yeah, the hair bothers me a whole lot more than her outfit. It's obvious Bioware caved to the fanboys who found her too tomboyish and intimidating in ME1 and 2.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who drooled over Anderson... :D That man looks hot in uniform.
I want to see fem!Shep and Kaidan already! :( I think Mark Meer has gotten a bit better at voice acting, he seemed to improve a bit in ME2, and in the prologue I posted.
