My understanding is that there is a live action film in development from Legendary Pictures and an unrelated animated film set for release next year.

That's what I thought too. This description on the linked video is what got me:

"A panel about the upcoming animated mass effect movie to be made by Legendary pictures at the 2011 comic con."

I'm not looking at the ME movie as official canon. I plan to see it as "this is the story of someone else's Shepard".

It's just too bad that there WILL be small minded people who will use it to belittle other people's sheps, like they already do now, just because Sheploo's the one on the cover.
