COME GET THE PIE!

May 23, 2008 13:06

As far as Lucy knew, what she was about to do was okay. After all, the phones were here for a reason, no one would care if she called a few of her friends. After all it wasn't like she was on the phone as much as Lizzie or Joelle could be. But Lucy did have a lot of friends who were likely wondering what the heck had happened to her and Lewis ( Read more... )

Josh was making his way through the mansion with a couple books under his arm. It had taken him awhile to get these mechanical books out. Mostly because he had to figure out where two long overdue books were. They had been tossed somewhere in his room when his room got tossed trying to figure out why he hadn't been sleeping.

Though his movements slowed down when he passing through a room and saw a young, confused Guthrie staring at a phone. He backtracked back into the room and looked at Lucy.

"Something wrong with the phones?"

Lucy looked up and saw the Golden Josh there, "Ah dunno. Ah think Ah keep gettin' hung up on...." she said, sounding confused.

Josh frowned. That didn't sound right. Though he had no idea who she was calling or why. He doubted panking because she wouldn't be making that face at being hung up on. He walked over.

"Hung up on by who?" She may have been hyper, but she wasn't that bad in Josh's opinion.

"Mah friend's parents," Lucy said looking down at the phone, "Ah wanted to talk to mah friends so they know I didn't get blown up with our farm...."

Admittedly, the good smell drew him to the kitchen.

He should have known that he was walking into a trap.

Ever since they got here, he had been quietly avoiding the Children of the Cornfield and their matriarch. He even minimized his contact with the Hayseed, not that he was any less harsh on him when the two did have to be around each other.

But now he found himself in a room with two of them.

Ok, there was pie. And Sofia, Cessily, and Cactus Jack Foley.

But there were still two Guthrie's (and he wouldn't be surprised if more popped out of the woodwork) so he pondered leaving.

Girlfriend, best friend, good friend, and pie, but he'd have to deal with the Clan Cornfed. Or he could leave, and see his friends later when the Guthrie's weren't around, though there likely wouldn't be any pie involved.

...damn

This was a really tough choice. Maybe he could snag a slice of pie to go?

"I see you hiding in the doorway there, young man. You don't come and get some pie now, there might not be any by the time you do, the way you kids eat at this school."

She was making another batch, but after that, that was it, and the X-Men would probably be hitting the pie as well as the students.

"I'm not 'hiding.'" Because that was cowardly.

"I was... weighing my options. I'm very busy and all, don't think I have time to hang out right now. Maybe I'll just grab a slice and run." Fast. He might be able to escape this trap if he's quick enough.

"Nuh uh. Y'all are my taste-testers. That means you have to stay and tell me how it is or else you've got to wait along with everyone else," she said shrewdly. "I just tried out a new crust. Besides, the only thing better'n the pie is the company. Why don't you sit down and join us?"

She merely peered in. The smell was fantastic and it brought sweet memories of home. Literally sweet. Paige chewed her lower lip, looking at the crowd of students. If it had been just the family she would have waltzed in and had her some of that pie. But she was never good with a mixed group. Paige was going to end up talking funny and right in front of her sister and brother or in front of the students.

This was hell, wasn't it?

If it was Hell, then Lucy was one of those little imps with a pitchfork because she saw her older sister and skipped over, "Yah comin' in for the pie or what?" she asked, pulling Paige's arm to get here to come into the kitchen.

Paige had to have pie. It was their job to eat Momma's pies. And they did smell so good.

"Uh. Busy." There, that was one word that didn't sound too strange to be said with or without an accent.

"You ain't too busy for pie," Lucy said in her best Momma type voice. It was perfectly logical. You were never too busy for pie.

Clip clop clip.

The Professor looks faintly embarrased to be here, largely because he figures that the Gunthries rightly blame him for getting their house burnt down. So many people he's promised to protect have fallen because of his ineptitude...

...also, well, pie. Still, largely, the Professor figures the head of the Gunthire clan needs some good natured venting, and so leans against the wall, idly scritching Annie, his yellow tabby cat, 's chin and waiting for one of the horde of Gunthries to be freed up.

"Hello, Professor," Lucinda said warmly. "Apple, strawberry rhubarb, or pecan?"

x_professor_x May 28 2008, 02:09:48 UTC
"Hello, Mrs. Guthire." The Professor isn't suprised that the RAGE is dilated a little, because of all the other people around. -and, well, gosh, free pie. They teach you not to turn down free pie in 'nam.

"...I'll try a slice of pecan, if it is not too much trouble." Savier says, looking a bit confused in spite of it all. "Are you all moderately comfortable here? I know things are a bit cramped..."

A light laugh.

That piece of pecan was a large piece. Either she had no problems with him, or was hoping it was so big that he'd choke on it.

"We're a little used to cramped," she said, "And I can't complain; it was mighty generous of you to let us stay until we're on our feet. Which'll be soon, actually. Got a buyer for the land, a nice little apartment picked out for us to live in 'til the new house is built, been shopping for contractors, and as soon as the insurance comes in, we should be on our way."

Julian had been quietly stuffing his mouth, even letting Josh's comment slide without a smart remark of his own. For once, he was actually hoping to be ignored, and his plan seemed to be working.

But, there was something said earlier that got him curious, and he invariably had to ask, even despite himself.

"...what the hell is a 'rhubarb' anyway?"

"It's a vegetable," remarked Lucinda, from where she was rolling out the crust. Most of the kids were talking amongst themselves now, and digging into the pies. "You cut off the leaves and use the stalks. It's a bit tart. Aside from pies, it's great in jam. Stews up a nice tart kind of sauce."

There was something rubbing against Julian's leg.

"Meow!"

It wasn't the Professor's cat. Cat's made a "mrrow" noise. They didn't say 'Meow.'

His whole body tensed at the sudden contact. He looked down at the source, and didn't seem to relax much at all when he noticed it was one of the Guthrie's getting friendly with him.

And he couldn't punt her across the room for that. Damnit.

"What the he-- what are you doing?"
