Tinker toys are for amateurs

Lewis was in 'his' room, tinkering with someone's old alarm clock. He was pretty sure it was a student's. And since he took it out of the trash, it wasn't stealing, really. And since the basket just had paper stuff in it, it wasn't gonna get him in trouble for digging through gross, icky garbage, either ( Read more... )

"What'cha doing?" Lucy said, coming up behind him. She had on the sunglasses she had taken from Paige. And Paige's door had been locked lately.

So she had been taking things from Mel's room, which showed in the jewelry she was wearing.

"What's that? Is it gonnah blow up?"

Lewis blinked out of his daze and glanced at his twin. "It's an alarm clock, not a bomb."

He scratched his neck, studying it distractedly. "And Ah'm fixin' it for Momma."

"It looks like a bomb to me," Lucy said leaning over it. "Look what Paige gave me," she held up the sunglasses, "Aren't they just great! She had a lotta weird things in her room here that she didn't have in her other room."

The room that got blown up.

"Well, it ain't." She wasn't going to let him work on it, was she? He stood up. "They're nice. Ain't they big, though? An' what all sort of weird stuff's Paige got now?"

He was tempted to unleash these kids on the Danger Room. Kids always were quite imaginative, and always the most creative with the locations and scenarios. But not today.

"You're not going to see that today. But I'll make sure someone shows you around soon.

"And so you're both clear on this, neither of you are allowed down here without an adult accompanying you." There were no threats as to what would happen if they didn't comply, because Scott didn't really bother with those when he didn't need to.

He led them down a series of halls, and right into the hangar.

"Jay's an adult, right?" Lewis looked around as they walked, taking it all in. He hadn't really been up for sight-seeing the last time he'd been to the hangar.

"Jay ain't an adult. He ain't old enough to vote or drink without a fake ID," Lucy said. Like he even did the latter. Jay could be very, very boring.

But he was so awesome still.

"He's still old enough to take you down here, but if he's not where he can see exactly what you're doing, it doesn't count as 'accompanying'." In other words, they can't say 'Jay said it was ok to be down here' and expect that excuse to fly.

He stopped in front of one of the jets.

"This is a custom modified SR-71 Blackbird aircraft. They're capable of a lot of amazing feats, but they need a lot of work to keep them running in top shape. This one needs a little work, so the three of us are going to open up the engines and fix it."

After fixing the jet, or working on it at least, even Lucy has grease smudges and stains on her. Though she had spent most of her time fetching tools and rolling around the hanger. She left all the mechanical stuff to her twin because she didn't want to wreck anything accidentally.

Though she had still managed to wear and almost talk herself completely out of energy.

She poked her twin, leaving a big smudge on his shirt, "You just fixed a jet. And an alien music box!"

"Best day ever!" Lewis was much, much filthier than his twin. Momma was probably going to yell at him for messing his clothes so bad, but he couldn't stop grinning. Arms raised, he laughingly declared, "Ah helped fix a jet!"

That said, he'd pretty well exhausted himself doing it. Lewis let his arms fall. Actually, he felt kinda hungry.

Cyclops was filthy as well, likely to the shock of most. He generally did clean up before heading back upstairs, but made an exception this time.

He had to admit that Lewis picked up on the instructions rather quickly for someone his age. They might be looking at the next Tony Stark right there. He'll definitely have to have Hank evaluate the kids IQ.

"Glad you enjoyed yourselves. Now both of get cleaned up, and try not to get grease all over the place in the meantime."

"Yeah, Momma's gonna to flip out if we both look like this th' rest of the day. You gonnah tell Jay yah fixed a jet, Lew?" Lucy asked, moving in to clean off her hands on his shirt.

Kind of, anyway. With all the other dirt and junk on his shirt it was more like just adding grease to her hands. "You ain't never been so slimy before!"
