THE END IS HERE!

The banner waves over the bank of cash registers. Behind them, precious cargo stacked in sealed crates. They can't sell any copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows for another 4 hours, no matter how often kids dressed as Gryffindors and Hufflepuff's wipe their noses on the counter and beg ( Read more... )

They promised Alicia Masters she was dressed as a Gryffindor. She's sitting in front of a group of children, reading aloud from a Braile copy of the first Harry Potter book.

"Here, read this part!" A little boy drags her fingers to another part of the page. She grins at them. Reading with your fingers is kind of like magic.

"...the lightning shaped scar burned..."

A bookseller who clearly threw a red and tan striped scarf over her "Sexy Witch" costume from last Halloween is cheerfully painting kids faces.

Luna happily made her way to the face painting line, fidgeting as she had to wait her turn. She wondered exactly what she'd have done. She watched to see what other kids were getting done, all she knew was she wanted something blue. Because that was her favorite color.

"How about a Gryffindor crest on your cheek? Or maybe one of the ghosts from Pac Man?"

It's late, which is making her a lot more honest about her painting skills.

"What's Pac man?" Luna asked, "I like the crest, can I have that?"

A volunteer in what looks more like a pirate costume than something from Harry Potter helps kids - and a few adults - make thier own brooms from sticks and yarn.

A smiling blonde in her 30's stops next to the Broom making table. Behind her glasses, her eyes flash a dark amber.

"Sea Hag."

Callisto's one good eye fixes on the other woman.

"Smurf."

Her thickest tentacles are knotted around one another until they're roughly the width of a human arm. The rest hang limp at her sides. She helps a six year old glue more yarn on the end of a stick.

"Been awhile. When you're done here, I'm in a mood for sushi."

"Ohmigod! Ohmigod! Ohmigod!" Melody Guthrie bursts into the room, plastering her face against the cashier's chest.

"Please! Please! Please!" She can't rip her eyes from the boxes behind him. If only she could levitate objects instead of just flying. Stupid powers!

"Kid...if you need it that bad, download it off the internet," the booseller hisses. He peels her off his chest. She has a lanyard print on her cheek.

It's gonna be a long night.

"Oh gosh! Oh golly! Oh wow!"

The QuinJetta's still belching smoke out in the parking lot, but Squirrel Girl is in another world. A world where school is neat and teachers are your best friends and magic really works.

"Do you think my costume's okay?" She's in a borrowed high school graduation robe under a long tan and red scarf.

Mr. Immortal rises like some kind of sleep-deprived blond zombie from the back seat. "Hnnwha? Are we there yet?"

Drool has plastered an empty juice box to his face.

Dinah Soar gently plucks the juice box off his face.
