Suffer the Little Children

May 08, 2007 20:44

The police have come to take care of these young punks. But it doesn't take long before additional forces appear on the scene.

SHIELD agents, descending on the scene in jetpacks, lower weapons at the Young Avengers and the mutants floating above.

"Stand down, mutants and vigilantes," one of the SHIELD agents orders. "You are all under arrest."

Catseye and Tommy remain hidden from sight in another alley. It had been Catseye's thought to find Danny and Ang and make sure that they were all right, but they had overshot the mark by no little bit and, by the time they'd gotten turned around, Ang had taken matters into his own hands and the alley had been crawling with cops. It had seemed a good idea to stay out of sight until there was a good moment to put the cops off balance and let everyone get clear. But the odds of that are getting worse with every passing moment.

Catseye is on all fours again, growling softly under her breath as they watch SHIELD's people arrive.

"Nastymen make trouble for heartfriends," she rumbles to Tommy. "Maybe cages, yes? Not good."

The cops don't look happy, but they aren't getting in SHIELD's way.

Blake glances at Cassie. "Stand down," he pleads.

"No, definitely not good, Cat. Especially since they're probably planning to stick us in their prisoncages," Tommy whispers to her, trying his best to add a little Catseye-speak to his sentence. His hand is on her head, petting her softly. He watches SHIELD's agents as he and Catseye hide in their shadowy little corner, still honestly confused with what's going on. It seems like he was just broken out of the juvenile detention center recently and now here he is in the middle of a battle that he doesn't fully understand.

Yeah, that definitely gives us points. But hey, as long as they don't see us hiding...

"I'm wondering if maybe vaporizing their guns is a smart thing to do."

There are a lot of things Cassie would rather do than surrender in front of her step-father, fighting SHIELD is one of them. But ultimately it's not her call.

"Patriot?"

With the cops, they could have used distraction tactics and gotten away. This new presence, however, took this into levels she'd rather not think about.

With her people in the mix with the "bad guys" she can't use the gas tip. Another arrow is chosen, drawn and fired at a street garbage can. There's a bright flash and the contents of the can ignites into rapidly growing flames. Eventually, even the can itself will burn. The compound in the tip is a modern varient of Greek Fire.

Go ahead. Put water on it. The techs tell me only sand will put that stuff out.

Hulkling followed Patriot's orders without hesitation. Barreling forward into the soldiers, forearms hard as granite held defensively forward, like a shield, he bored a path through the crowed tossing whichever soldiers who dared stand in resistance to the side.

He didn't worry too much about the guns, as whatever bullets weren't deflected by his tough hide would likely be expelled, and their damage path healed by his evolved immune system.

More SHIELD keeps arriving, however. New York is one of their strongholds, especially after 9/11. It's like kicking an ant's nest... more of them keep coming.

But in this case, the ants are armed to the teeth with the latest technology. And they can fly.

They might be able to fly but someone can swat them out of the sky. Cassie just hoped she wouldn't get shot while doing it.

Watching the Young Avengers deal with the cops was bound to be amusing, but leave it to SHIELD to ruin a good time. And while Julian was happy to let SHIELD and the Young Avengers battle it out, he wasn't going to stick around for that, particularly since he knew SHIELD wasn't going to let his team go.

Point of fact, they weren't letting his team go. The moment he began to pull his squad away, several agents came after them. Carrying so many people, he knew he couldn't outrace them to Westchester, he couldn't maneuver freely enough to shake them, and he was not about to bring this mess to his brother's place. Judging by the kind of artillery they were hitting his tk-bubble with, he wouldn't be able to protect them for much longer.

Only one option left, stand and fight.

He dropped his team down about a block and a half from where they started and handed out orders.

"Tag, clear out the civilians, see if you can get SHIELD off our backs as well. Everyone else, if he can't do it, we'll have to drive them off ourselves. Get ready."

"Hellion, I'm gonna head back, see if I can heal up some of the Young Avengers." Josh said looking to Hellion, he was saying it, but he was askign permission.

"They're gonna need out help as much as we're going to need theirs if we all want to get out of this." He said, truth be told, he couldn't stand do see them all get hurt like he was watching. He could help with that, and he would.

"You're going to stay here." That was Julian's leader voice. He wasn't yelling, but his decision was perfectly clear.

Permission denied. Let the Young Avengers get their asses kicked, he had his own team to worry about...

"You wouldn't make it twenty feet on your own in this mess."

...and he wasn't about to sacrifice them.

"And do what exactly Hellion?" Josh said starting to put his defenses up. "This is SHIELD we're talking about, they are not going to let us out of here without a fight. I know enough about them to know what's going to happen, and enough to know that what we're doing is technically illeagal. These folks are coming in to bring us down, we're not a match for them."

"Plus, we don't have a teleporter on our side, they do. I might not be the leader here, and my powers might be useless when it comes to attacking, but if we want to get out of here the Young Avengers are our best bet."

Who knew that Elixir could make sense sometimes?

A blue and orange clad object comes flying into the battlefield, and slams into the agent carrying the sonic gun.

"Ugh, I have got to work on those landings."

Speedball looks around and notices that he's surrounded by SHIELD.

"Definitely need to do that. Would you excuse me for a second?"

The agents near him don't reply, temporarily shocked by the presence of the kinetic sponge.

"Right then. Seeya!"

The Masked Marvel kaPwings! himself over to the Young Avengers, landing near Hollow, fwapping some agents with a few kinetic spheres.

"Yo, what'd I miss?"

Julian couldn't hear a thing, and he had lost all sense of what was up and down. He could see, but couldn't make out much of what was going on around him. He didn't bother trying to sort it out.

He closed his eyes and pushed all that out of his mind as he tried to focus on one task: using his tk to put Santo back together. His powers would have to be his eyes and his ears, and they were the only hope of saving Santo's life.

"HELLION!" Josh screamed, as he reached him. Noticing that his friend had now righted himself. But it didn't work, Julian was not responding. Josh started to approach slowly, he saw what Julian was doing, and he only hoped that it would work, also he had no desire to surprise a telekinetic. But they needed Julian if they were going to save Cess.

When he got closer, Josh noticed blood coming from Julian's ears. He's deaf! he realized, and he got in close enough that Julian should feel his presence by now.

Feel, yeah, and it was fortunate that Julian took a second to look at who just entered his tk-field before lashing out. He couldn't really see Josh, so much as a hazy, swirling crap load of gold, which was enough for him to figure things out.

"FOLEY?"

He was shouting, but only because he couldn't hear himself talk.

"THEY MADE ME DEAF OR SOMETHING. FIX IT!"

And as he was giving the order, he went back to trying to fix Santo.

Josh put his hands to Julian's ears and concentrated, bringing up his power to fix his friend. Taking his energy and giving it to Julian. Josh was starting to tire now, he wasn't sure how much more of this he could do, and from what he could see he wasn't going to be needed to do a lot more of it.
