The halls of the United States Congress are filled with fear. Congressmen, staffers, reporters, lobbyists. Hundreds upon hundreds of people, held at gunpoint.

It's unclear to everyone how so many soldiers got access to the building. A lot of things are still unclear ( Read more... )

"I'm here," Cap says. "Now release the hostages."

The Skull smiles, and it's in the malicious grimace he can really be seen.

"A few at a time, as my man downstairs said. That way, our privacy is assured."

He nods to one of the Ultimatum soldiers.

"Tourists, office staff and maintenance can go," he says. Take them out in groups of five. Shoot to kill if anyone feels heroic, and then kill two more at random."

He returns his attention to his archnemesis.

"This will continue while we talk."

Captain America glances at the hostages.

"Cooperate with them and no one will be hurt," he assures them. Then he turns to the Skull.

"I'm not sure what we have to say to each other."

"Really?" he says, looking faux-hurt. "After all this time?"

He laughs maniacally.

"There is a hierarchy to who leaves, and in what order. The civilians first, of course. Then the lobbyists, followed by the journalists. The politicians will be last. Each wrong move will result in needless death."

He pulls in close to the Captain, looking him in the eyes.

"This is only the prelude, you understand. Swamp's End, Cyclops, Mockingbird, Roberts, this ..."

He waves his hands outward joyously, as though his current handiwork were magnificent.

"All set up. All for you."

"This isn't about me," Captain America replies simply. "This is about you, and your insatiable lust for power. I simply do not enter into this equation."

"It's always been about us, Captain. Good versus evil, control vs. Freedom. We are the twin sides of the American Dream, you and I."

He turns, his arms folded behind his back, and grins at the Captain.

"I need you to understand how close I came this time, how you only came across the clues I wanted you to find. I knew the Mockingbird would uncover the ties between Swamp's End and the Super Soldier Formula, knew the X-Men would eventually find my base in Tennessee. It was imperative."

Captain America's eyes narrow, but he says nothing.

This is the Skull's show. Until the hostages are free, it will remain his show.

...for now.

"That's the word people, Go!"

And with that, Scott leads his team on an all-out strike on the building.

"Conventional forces stand down!" shouts Sitwell into a communicator. "Secure the perimeter, let the costumes handle the hostiles!"

Leaping off of Captain America's costume, where he and his colleagues have been concealing themselves microscopically, Dr. Pym suddenly grows to a normal size, while performing his own rendition of the Fastball Special...

... and growing exponentially from that size in mid-air is Colossus, unaccustomed to being on this end of the maneuver, but happy to be shifting into his metal form and barrelling into a cabal of Ultimatum troops, hoping to position himself between them and the congressmen once he's on his feet again.

They thought they were ready for anything, but this maneuver took them completely by surprise. The guns all get trained on the scary metal man, allowing some of the politicians to stampede toward safety.

Pym continues to grow to a larger size to help protect that stampede while the others get more offensive-minded.

Being that small was waaaay weird and bobbi was more than happy for Janet to bring them back to normal size again.

As soon as she was grown the staves flick out from her sleeves and back to her hands again and again as she tries to drive the troops away from the hostages.

"Come on, pick on someone your own size fellas."

A battle stave knocks a rifle out of one Ultimatum soldier's hands, but he recovers and delivers a kick that could take off a normal person's head.

Um whoops...why is it everyone in the freaking world is super strong but her?

She leans over backwards to let the kick go over her head and turns it into a back walk over to kick him in the jaw on the way.

"Nice try, but not quite nice enough."

"You're good, he says, belaying a slight, Mid-Western jaw, but I'm no slouch and a lot stronger."

He backs it up with a lunge and a punch.
