The halls of the United States Congress are filled with fear. Congressmen, staffers, reporters, lobbyists. Hundreds upon hundreds of people, held at gunpoint.

It's unclear to everyone how so many soldiers got access to the building. A lot of things are still unclear ( Read more... )

Sam doesn't need to be told twice by Cyclops, as he blasts into the room through a window, the window shattering as he does so. Hey, what's a battle with out a little bit of property destruction.

"The calvary's here folks." He said to some politicians as he lands on the floor of the room, expanding his blast field to protect roughly half of the room. Most of the ones that are further from any exit, and don't have even the remotist chance of getting out of their unscathed.

"Y'all just hang tight, mah blast field will keep ya safe." He then keeps all of his attention on keeping up the field, he hops beyond all hope that they try attacking the field, because he's not going to have the energy to keep this up for long, without some kinetic energy to rechannel into the field.

The troops -- suddenly besieged on all sides -- open fire on cannonball, the bullets ricocheting off his blast field.

Cyclops is in motion into the building, ruby red force beams bouncing from one soldier to the next.

"Keep moving forward, keep property damage to a minimal."

The cameras are all on the X-Men.

A lot is riding on this moment.

Sam surpresses a grin, at being told to keep the property damage to a minimal. But in all fairness it was the quickest way in, and really at least the damage wasn't structural.

"Cyclops, Ah'm not sure how long Ah can keep holding this." Sam yells out, "Not with all these guys shooting at us." Sam made sure he was loud enough so everyone could hear him. Nothing like a little bit of reverse psychoology on the soldiers. The bullets kept coming at his blast field, he kept rechanneling the energy back into the field, making it stronger.

"You can hold it," says Scott, levelly, getting his ploy. And then lower, through his com. "Draw fire while the rest of us go in"

She delivered Mockingbird into the mess but remained at Wasp size herself to enter the fray herself.

She targets one of the soldiers aiming for an ally and delivers a Sting to his wrist.

"Hey now. It's not polite to point, you know."

They're well-trained. Taskmaster trained.

One sees the Wasp and begins tracking her with a laser-scoped pistol, drawing a bead and firing.

They may be well trained but so is she. She's been in this scenario more times than she has shoes.

The trick is to keep weaving in and out of badguys so if they do take a shot, chances are they will hit one of their own.

Being almost molecular-small like? Not his favorite thing in the world. And when you're that small, you're pretty damned sensitive to sound. Even so, he's got just a split second as he's sprung back to normal size to hand Cap's shield - the real one - back to his friend and teammate before slinging his bow around and off his shoulder to nock and let loose a net arrow. "Damned near took out my left eardrum with that racket," he grouses at him.

Cap doesn't pay attention to Hawkeye's grousing. He's got his shield. The Skull is slipping out, with armed men between Cap and the Skull's exit.

He charges forward, using the shield as a plow, to knock men aside.

"Skull!" he bellows.

Hawkeye's on cleanup, with an eye to taking out anyone still standing. Tranquilizer tips should do the job.

As the soldiers have begun laying cover fire and retreating to God knows where, the Skull grabs an elderly senator in a necklock.

He moves slowly down the corridor, beleauguered by the wieght of dragging the old man.

"Really, Captain," he hisses. "This one wants to put mutants in camps. He said so behind closed doors just the other day. Surely he'd be no loss."

They're near the outside wall somewhere. The sound of the battle outside is thunderous.

SHIELD agents, led by Sitwell, storm in to secure the building, but are left bemused by the lack of Ultimatum soldiers.

"Where did they all go?"

"Agent Sitwell, we've got about 20 prisoners, some of whom are in critical condition. One deceased."

"Right. Get them to prison infirmary. I want to know when any of them are ready to talk."

He turns his attention to the assembled Avengers and X-Men.

"Looks like we won."
