Travel advice?

OK, guys. After I wrap up the semester here, I'll have about three weeks to travel. I'm flying back from NYC, and my current plan is to rent a car and drive there. I'm currently in Gainesville, Florida. Anyone have any advice as where to go / where absolutely not to go? Any advice on traveling alone in the US? Any tips on where to stay? Places I would recommend that are within driving distance of Gainesville include:

- Memphis, TN
- Washington, D.C.
- New Orleans, LA
- Atlanta, GA

I would HIGHLY recommend New Orleans, and it's only 8 hours from Gainesville and super easy to get to, 75 North to I-10 West.

If you haven't been to Ichetucknee Springs, you should go with some friends!

Travelling alone is not a problem at all in the US. I just came back from a two-month trip through the Northeast of this big, huge country and had an excellent time. Everybody is so friendly and if you just ask and tell you're a stranger who doesn't know how everything works, almost everybody will help you out in times of trouble ( ... )

Hey!! Thanks for all the advice!! It looks like I won't be driving up to Maine anymore because the workshop was fully booked, but I'm still going to be roadtripping. I'll definitely check out those sites you mentioned!! :)
