Music for Castle (the rules by which we live)

May 09, 2011 11:21

I've made this piece for the podfic version of Castle (the rules by which we live). It's a modern AU of Merlin, with Arthur/Merlin as primary pairing. It's written by kick_flaw and read by itachitachi. This project is a part of podficbigbang

The podfic (which I think you should listen to) can be found here. Do please read the warnings first.

Some notes on writing this piece:

When I had read the fic my immediate thought was something clubby, low bassdrum, maybe some laughter and glass clinking in the background. itachitachi had something else in mind though. She was more interested in Merlin's journey into subspace and wanted something that showed that. So I sat down at the piano and came up with something I liked. Then I combined the ideas. Suffice to say, it would not have been as good without Itachi's input.

The piano is recorded on a grand piano at my school, using my iPod (this is why there is some distortion present). The drum is a clip I found on SoundCloud, free for use, which I then poked until it behaved. The piece is made using Audacity.

A more detailed description of the track:
It starts at first with bass drum, overlaid with some tinkling glass. Slowly piano fades in from on the left side. Another piano track fades in while the drums slow down and then goes on to make heartbeat sound, which then stop, leaving only the piano. The piano sound is meant to convey a sort of relaxation, floating, Merlin's experience of subspace.
The piano from the beginnin fades in again, but a slower version, while the other piano fades out. The drums come back, slower too. Then the piece sort of fades out.
