I have known of people who go away to their first semester of college and go nuts and wild, and end up flunking out or just barely passing  I guess freedom can be a powerful drug for those who feel they need to express themselves so, with their first real chance to make independent choices

The realization that a PhD. neither necessarily renders a person smart nor fit for teaching has to rank high among the lessons learned in my college experience. In fact, I'd say the majority of the most important lessons I learned never showed up in lectures or on tests - I'd have had prettier report cards otherwise!
