I signed up for a program given this afternoon at the Audubon Greenwich Nature Center concerning pond life! I thought it would be really neat, and an area I have not explored much ( Read more... )

Pond life is so much fun. In fifth grade, my class spent three days at the Morton Arboretum. One day, we spent about an hour at a pond catching critters. We then looked at them under a microscope and witnessed a waterflea give birth! It was so awesome!

Wow! I would so love to see that! It is really unbelievable how much is going on in what seems like a quiet pond on a sleepy summers afternoon! :)

And I checked out the Morton Aboretum web site, that looks so fantastic! If I lived in the area, that would be a place I would like to spend a lot of time at! :)

It's far enough away that I do need to use a car... which with gas prices is annoying. I try to get everywhere by walking or biking.

A lot of different activities happened at the Arboretum though. There was the fifth grade camp out. My girl scout troop also went there for an orientation thingie.

They had a tree house exhibit once that my family went to as well. I haven't been there for a while though.

The classifications are a little weird. Hemiptera is the super-family which has two sub groups Homoptera and Heteroptera. The Homoptera are as you describe and the Heteroptera all the others (stinkbugs, mirid bugs, assassin bugs, etc.

But mostly I think they make it up as they go along.

They are weird! The insects are the only ones who know what they are, and they could give a fig what we humans think! ;)

We are quite lucky here, and there are rivers and ponds near by. Toads seems to turn up everywhere. I have to keep fishing them out of the water-butt. One even came into the house once, one night. I never did catch it. They are quite smart. It found it's own way out!

Good for the toad! Apparently looks can be deceiving! ;)
