Cicada Rescue

Aug 09, 2007 20:01

I just stepped outside the house in the early evening dusk to take out some trash, and there before me in the middle of the sidewalk at the bottom of the steps is a motionless cicada nymph.  "Hmmmm....." I think, this does not look like a cast-off shell, but the real deal!  Sure enough, I bend down to pick it up and the legs slowly begin to move ( Read more... )

Thats fun! I have actually never come across a nymph. Cool find! (And kudos for bringing the kids in - children are inherently curious and it seems like adults tend to stifle their interest in the more unusual animals like bugs and reptiles)

Thanks! I see them now and then, but last summer I did not see any, so this was very nice! They are like little bug robots, crawling to find a good spot! :)

I'm jealous. We're not getting any out around here and I so love those guys. Even the noise. Especially the noise. I find it strangely soothing.

Take some picture if you get a chance!

Thanks! This summer has been good around here, but last summer was a bit of a bust! Guess they come and go! :)

Are these annual cicadas or periodical cicadas! As cool as Brood X was, I'm very glad it's over. When the noise gets so bad you can't walk outside for fear of ear damage... it gets annoying!

These were annual, which is all I have ever seen around here! By mid-July you can usually count on having heard the first one, and by the end of the summer they are a bit loud. But not too bad, because there are not nearly as many as Brood X! :)

Here in Illinois, I had forgotten about all the annuals. A few weeks after Brood X died, I heard a cicada. I turned to my mother and exclaimed, "I thought they were all gone!" She laughed and reminded me about the annuals. I felt really stupid after that.
