Room 122 - Sunday Evening

Veronica so owed Piper.

Her BFF had cooked an amazing dinner of roast beef and yorkshire pudding upon Veronica's request after Archie mentioned craving it the other night at Caritas.

The food was warming in Veronica's oven, the table was set and she was waiting for Archie.

Archie took a sip of his wine and noticed that Veronica was drinking water instead.

"It really is a good wine. Why aren't you having yours?"

"It wouldn't scare me away," Archie reassured her. "If anything it makes me feel as though it's even more worthwhile for me to spend time with you."

Veronica smiled. "That's really very sweet," she said. "Of course, you always say things that are very sweet."

"I'm not always like this, you know," Archie told her. "I can be damned mean-spirited when the mood takes me, as I'm sure certain favorite victims of mine are all too aware."

He froze for a moment and considered his word choice. Victims? "I can't believe I just said that. I don't want to turn into him."

"You won't," Veronica said emphatically. "Because deep down, you're a good person and that's what matters."

She shook her head. "Besides, not everyone is nice all the time. I'm certainly not. I don't know how to mind my own business and I don't think twice about violating someone's privacy."

There was a slight groan. "I'd never to do that to you though. Unless you gave me reason to suspect you were up to no good."

Archie's surprise at how casually she'd made that statement was likely quite evident.

"I trust you," he said, and that was the honest truth there. "Besides, I haven't done anything of dubious repute since the court-martial trial, and that was what killed me."

Archie sighed and put his head down on the table. He hadn't meant to say that either.

"Court-martial trial?" Veronica asked. "Were you on trial, or testifying? I think Logan's dad tried to kill me so I couldn't testify against him, not that it did any good, since he still went free. But at least someone was smart enough to kill the sadistic bastard before he could hurt anyone else."

That last bit was said with quite a bit more force than Veronica had intended. If she'd intended to say it at all, which she hadn't.

"Good," Archie said with more force than he'd meant to imply. "I saw how terrified the bastard made you. It's a damn shame that someone got to Simpson before I did, or I would have . . ."

His jaw clenched again, and he took a deep breath before answering her question. There was a tight, somewhat bitter smile on his lips as he spoke. "I was on trial for mutiny -- myself, Horatio, and the rest of the lieutenants of the Renown. We were suspected of killing our captain, speaking of sadistic bastards, and I daresay he deserved it for all his wild accusations about us turning the crew against him. This was after I'd been shot; I took all the blame for it, because I knew I was going to die anyway."

And there it was: the truth of the matter as Archie had never told it to anyone before. Hearing the words out loud made him pale a bit.

"Did you actually do it?" Veronica asked. She wasn't sure why she asked, she was pretty sure she really didn't want to know, given that in the grand scheme of things, it hardly mattered.

Archie nodded, then shook his head. "In deed? It was not my hand that pushed him down the gangway. In intention? Yes, I agreed with the others that it needed to be done," he said keeping it kind of vague because canon never said who did it if anyone did at all. "But Horatio's career was worth saving. We needed him."

"Some people just need to die," Veronica said. "That's why I asked Bel to kill Logan's father."

She closed her eyes and wondered why she couldn't seem to keep anything to herself tonight.

That revelation actually did shock Archie a bit. "You asked him to do it? To be honest," and what else could he be tonight, whether or not he knew why? "I don't know that I would have quite expected that of you."

"It wasn't my proudest moment," Veronica confessed. "And I changed my mind pretty quickly and told him not to do it."

She stared down at her hands. "It's why Logan and I broke up."

"But you told me he was dead," Archie said slowly. "If you asked Bel not to do it . . ."

"Bel didn't do it," Veronica said firmly. "He was shot in the dead in a hotel room. They have no idea who did it."

"Good," Archie said just as firmly. He didn't elaborate; he meant it on both counts. "As relieved as I am to know he won't be tormenting you any more, I wouldn't want you to have that on your conscience."
