Stuff happening...

It’s been a month now since I became a copyeditor at The Fix. Seems longer, though it went by quickly and so far I’ve surfaced unscathed.

My new PC will be here Monday! I like having two screens and two PCs to work off of. Yeah, I know, profligate bastard that I am. I use one for the Internet and one for writing. My Internet PC is working fine, but ( Read more... )

Thanks, Peadar! What, you're not offering to make a cameo in my snuff cinema tale? I bet you have nine lives... ;)

You'd lost that bet! I'm doing a lot of cycling these days and I've used up my eight spares on the dangerous Irish roads ;)

Be careful. Roadkill is not a career option for the next famous Irish writer. :)

I don't think it decadent at all as I have two computers in use myself, a mac and a pc laptop. And I'm shuddering that I didn't buy a newer laptop a few months back when I could still get XP. Vista, Ugh!

I'll add you to my list, Oz, of those who grumble at Vista!

The refurbished E-Machine was on $199 +shipping, but that it had XP was what sold me. Until the Sony died, I was thinking about waiting until Windows 7 came out, but I think this one will last me a good long while.

I've thought about getting a laptop, but then I'd have to be cool and go write in a coffeeshop and then someone would probably bug me and ask, "What are you writing?" and I'd get pissed that I lost my muse and say "Mind your own damned @%$# business!" and spill coffee on my laptop and... Just saying I really don't know what I'd do with a laptop. :)

We have at least 4 computers in our house at the moment. My husband builds 'em out of spare parts.

And I thought I was profligate. ;)

No serious, that cool about the hubby. My dad built the old Sony one that just died. He built it at a PC workshop years ago and it gave me no problems until the power supply went out. I guess I could fix it, but I wanted a new one and it did last me six years. Luckily I saved all my fiction on it to disc. But I'm still going to take it apart and download the hard drive when the new one comes.

I'm a computer ignoramus, so his skills impress me no end. All ours were made piecemeal, except for his laptop.

I'm slowly learning about all this stuff. When I lived in Kerrville, I had a friend up the street who was an expert. He helped me no end. One day when he was helping me with my then current problem, I asked him, "Steve, why are computers so difficult? Why aren't they like...?"

"You mean like a television? Where all you have to do is turn it on at it always works?"

"Exactly," I said.

Steve said, "It has to to with interfacing of systems and components. It's like a toothbrush. Every admits they have to have one, but no one wants to use anyone else's."

I guess that's why this stuff is often so confusion. Too many cooks screwing up the broth! :)

I couldn't exist without my laptop and the wireless. Especially since the pc is in the room where the grandbaby naps and I can't go online when he isn't napping. I read the other day that Windows is moving the release date of "7" forward, presumably because of all the bad things people have said about Vista. But why should we think that "7" will be an improvement at this point? My son has Vista and he hasn't had any problems. But he hasn't any old programs or a printer either.

Anyway, Happy Blogging Anniversary!

Thanks, Pam!

Yeah, who knows if Windows 7 will be any better. I'm happy with XP. I had Window 98 for a while. It kept freezing up on me, but I hear that happened to a lot of people.

Oh, I can just see you at the laptop and the grandbaby vying for attention. ;)

LOL, yeah it's pretty ugly. Although actually it's not my attention he's vying for, he just wants at the computer cause it looks like such FUN! :-) They learn so young, eh?

Get the grandbaby his own LJ. That's guaranteed to suck up the rest of his life. How many novels could we all have written if not for this cool social toy? *hee*

Am getting a new laptop next week. Lightweight Dell thingy which will be a dream compared to this lumpen Compaq. And I hate Vista with a passion!
