Stuff happening...

It’s been a month now since I became a copyeditor at The Fix. Seems longer, though it went by quickly and so far I’ve surfaced unscathed.

My new PC will be here Monday! I like having two screens and two PCs to work off of. Yeah, I know, profligate bastard that I am. I use one for the Internet and one for writing. My Internet PC is working fine, but ( Read more... )

We have at least 4 computers in our house at the moment. My husband builds 'em out of spare parts.

And I thought I was profligate. ;)

No serious, that cool about the hubby. My dad built the old Sony one that just died. He built it at a PC workshop years ago and it gave me no problems until the power supply went out. I guess I could fix it, but I wanted a new one and it did last me six years. Luckily I saved all my fiction on it to disc. But I'm still going to take it apart and download the hard drive when the new one comes.

I'm a computer ignoramus, so his skills impress me no end. All ours were made piecemeal, except for his laptop.

I'm slowly learning about all this stuff. When I lived in Kerrville, I had a friend up the street who was an expert. He helped me no end. One day when he was helping me with my then current problem, I asked him, "Steve, why are computers so difficult? Why aren't they like...?"

"You mean like a television? Where all you have to do is turn it on at it always works?"

"Exactly," I said.

Steve said, "It has to to with interfacing of systems and components. It's like a toothbrush. Every admits they have to have one, but no one wants to use anyone else's."

I guess that's why this stuff is often so confusion. Too many cooks screwing up the broth! :)

My husband ("Tech Support") thinks that most people think that computers are more difficult than they are because there's a "New Technology Mystique" surrounding them that makes most people think that only qualified "computer wizards" should touch them.

I assume that "Tech Support" is the hubby's title and not his given name. And he probably say that about the "New Technology Mystique" because he is a "qualified computer wizard." ;)

It's what I call him online. ;)
Actually, he tries to help people who are intimidated by computers become less so. He said a lot of the people he's helped have acted like the computer would burst into flame if they touched it.

He does amateur photography too: http://www.anthologybuilder.com/artist_details.php?byline=Michael%20Mead
