{HUGS} I'm 41, and there are times when I realize I'm not over grade school, junior high or high school. It's not so much a flinch, as an assumption that really attractive folks are simply not going to want to be around me, and are only being nice because they're trying to be polite in public, that behind my back, I'm either quickly forgotten or I'm made fun of. Oddly enough, I've not had that feeling around anyone famous I've met, all of them have come across as genuine, and others who have met those folks have had the same experience. Some folks who *think* they're famous however, that's another story sometimes. The same with guys, I know that no guy is going to want to be anything more than friends with me, and sometimes I wonder if the guys who are my friends aren't just more putting up with me than anything else. I know they're my friends, but the old doubts spring up sometimes, and I refortify my old defensive walls just in case to avoid getting hurt ( ... )

I'm not over my old boarding school either, so don't worry about it. Human nature to shy away from what once hurt us.

*hugs* Well, I would've hung out with you. I liked hanging out with smart and dillegent students in school. I enjoyed their company far more than people who hung out in cliques and were more focuses on trends and the nearest cute guy. And I do have a cousin with Asperger's, so, its something I know a little bit about from first hand experience.

I might be back to actually say something when its not bedtime.

I'm 36, and I still feel awkward. Not so much the outsider anymore since I found fellow geeks into things like scifi, comics, fantasy, the SCA and such... but I'm not exactly a "babe magnet" and I get shy around new people, especially if they are someone I am attracted to... I can relate so much.
