Smoke is the worst. We don't have such awful reasons for it (there's no profit in burning down Alaskan forests!), but we often get the same results. I have been scared this summer so far, because it's been SO hot, and the humidity has been looooow, and the winds have been high. This morning, fortunately, there is rain.
I shall think good smoke-free thoughts your way, too!
The US holds no attraction for me aside from its communes, and I know too much about its various problems. So it's ultimately going to be somewhere else, but not in the short term.
I don't know what's available in Singapore, but I use a HEPA filter (several, actually) to help clean the air. I actually keep n95s around (Lowe's sells one with a charcoal filter, it's awesome) and even a respirator around, picked up in the paint section of stores. The respirator is not comfortable, but it is very effective.
Bad air is terrible, so sorry Indonesia has such terrible practices!
