Having just finished ficcing about her, I'm curious to know what others think about Tom Riddle's mother. I performed a couple of quick searches on "Tom's mom," "mother of Tom Riddle," "Marvolos" and so on, and didn't find anything whatsoever ( Read more... )

I also have many ideas (and questions) about Tom's mother, but unfortunately I have yet to write anything much coherent about her. Once upon a time, I set out some thoughts on her situation in a rather rambly jumble that I've been meaning to re-write, and you can read it here (I know I kept calling all the Toms the wrong names, it's quite confusing).

chrysantza also had an excellent theory about her here.

While she's dead when the RPG starts, Julia Marvolo's a tangible presence in our RPG lightningwar (that's the old archive comm, we're restarting it soon) and she is due to make a few appearances in my fic "World Well Lost" which is LW backstory.

I'll check both out at the earliest - I've been wanting to read your fic for a while, and now I have time to do so. Thanks very much!

I have had a lot of verbal discussion on possible stories about tom's backround but sadly nothing typed up and coherant.
I don't think people knew that they were the descendants of Slytherin though, otherwise who opened the chamber of secrets wouldn't be such a mystery, if the bloodlines were known.
We named Tom's mother Pandora... couldn't help the mythic irony

Oooh. I named her Phaedra; was thinking of a different sort of thing, about desire and illicit passion and things along those lines.

Well, one thing about Tom is that perhaps a lot of people didn't know his middle name, and those who did were his "close friends". Dumbledore surely did, and so had his eye on Tom. But I wonder about no one not knowing the Marvolos were Slytherin descendants - seems like the sort of thing that they would trumpet all over the place. On the other hand, as I said, they might have been so exclusive that they preferred to be forgotten.

I can see what you are saying but I always felt that the families had to go into hiding at some point and who was who got obscured. Possibly after the conflict between Salasar and the rest of the founders the family took on a new name and identity so as to avoid the revenge that maybe Godric would have wanted to get on Salasar. Or it could have been an outside threat. Alternatively, Salasar's child is raised at Hogwarts by Rowena or something and due to the conflict is raised not knowing about their father so as to keep conflict from happening. Or the child is older at the time of the split and takes the rest of the founder's side and thus is ashamed to be associated with Salasar and thus hides his or her parentage.

Aww, thanks for TWIBbing! :D Don't know if you've seen my other WIP - Two Worlds Apart - it has a few points about Tom's mum, consistent with TWIB.

My fave fic about Tom's mother is this little one-shot by Northlight: Casting Shadows.

And The Serpentine Chain by fidelis_haven is a novel-length WIP that does an excellent job of providing family history for the Malfoys, the Snapes, and Tom Riddle's ancestors.

FAP threads to browse: the Mr and Mrs Riddle ship (a lot of crap on that thread, but good discussion mixed in as well), and the Voldie's Mum thread.

The backstory of Tom's mother has intrigued me ever since I read the HP books and wandered into the fandom. Questions keep multiplying. JKR has hinted that more info on Tom's background will be coming up in HBP - I'm really hoping for some answers (even if they send Julius Marvolo's story further into canon-improbability).

  • Why the hell was a descendant of Salazar Slytherin living in a Muggle village?!

  • If "all the pureblood families are related," why is Tom the very last descendant of ( ... )

It's a good theory. :) Beautiful, in fact. Thanks for commenting - are you planning a fic or essay about this? Because I would read it!
